Symptomatic synovial lumbar facet cysts are a relatively rare cause of radiculopathy and spinal stenosis. This case and brief review of the literature, details a patient who presented with acutely symptomatic bilateral spontaneously infected synovial facet (L4/5) cysts. This report highlights diagnostic clues for identifying infection of a facet cyst.

BACKGROUND Since the publication of guidelines by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the American Pain Society guidelines for low back pain in 2009 there have been deep divisions in the pain treatment community about the use of therapeutic intraarticular facet joint injections. While evidence for the effectiveness or not of intraarticular facet joint injections ...

BACKGROUND Facet joint interventions are used frequently for managing chronic spinal pain. Evidence continues to accumulate supporting the clinical effectiveness of these procedures and defining potential complications. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of three types of facet joint interventions (facet joint injections, medial branch blocks and facet joint neurotomy) in managing spinal...

Cervical facet fractures and dislocations represent approximately 6% of all cervical spine fractures.1 The clinical spectrum of these injuries ranges from patient being neurologically intact to complete neurological deficits. They can be unilateral or bilateral and may be associated with subluxation or dislocations. The unilateral facet dislocations are produced because of flexion, hyperextensi...

BACKGROUND CONTEXT Lumbar facet joint synovial cysts are benign degenerative abnormalities of the lumbar spine. Previous reports have supported operative and nonoperative management. Facet joint steroid injection with cyst rupture is occasionally performed, but there has been no systematic evaluation of this treatment option. PURPOSE To profile the role of facet joint steroid injections with ...

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Back pain is well recognised as a cause of poor performance in horses, but the role of lesions of the thoracolumbar synovial intervertebral articulations (facet joints) has not been well documented. OBJECTIVES To describe the clinical features, radiographic appearance and location of facet joint lesions and determine if there was any breed, gender, age, bodyweight...

A graph is α-critical if its stability number increases whenever an edge is removed from its edge set. The class of α-critical graphs has several nice structural properties, most of them related to their defect which is the number of vertices minus two times the stability number. In particular, a remarkable result of Lovász (1978) is the finite basis theorem for α-critical graphs of a fixed def...

STUDY DESIGN An international, multicenter cross-sectional image-based study performed in 33 institutions in the Asia Pacific region. OBJECTIVE The study addressed the role of facet joint angulation and tropism in relation to L4-L5 degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS). METHODS The study included 349 patients (63% females; mean age: 61.8 years) with single-level DS; 82 had no L4-L5 DS (group ...

Facet browsing has become popular as a user friendly interface to data repositories. The Semantic Web raises new challenges due to the heterogeneous character of the data. First, users should be able to select and navigate through facets of resources of any type and to make selections based on properties of other, semantically related, types. Second, where traditional facet browsers require man...

Clinical, epidemiological, and biomechanical studies suggest involvement of cervical facet joint injuries in neck pain. While bony motions can cause injurious tensile facet joint loading, it remains speculative whether such injuries initiate pain. There is currently a paucity of data explicitly investigating the relationship between facet mechanics and pain physiology. A rodent model of tensile...
