A novel technique to accelerate the aggregation and disaggregation stages in evanescent plane wave methods is presented. The new method calculates the six plane wave radiation patterns from a multipole expansion (aggregation) and calculates the multipole expansion of an incoming field from the six plane wave incoming field patterns. It is faster than the direct approach for multipole orders lar...

The nonlinear supratransmission is the property of a nonlinear system possessing a natural forbidden band gap to transmit energy of a signal with a frequency in the gap by means of generation of nonlinear modes (gap solitons). This process is shown to result from a generic instability of the evanescent wave profile generated in a nonlinear medium by the incident signal.

We study all-evanescent eigenmodes of a one-dimensional infinite periodic structure with alternating left-handed and right-handed materials that propagate perpendicularly to the surface or guided eigenmodes. Investigation of dispersion properties of such Bloch modes is shown to be crucial for understanding of an efficient radiation energy transport across the periodic multilayer structure. Freq...

When an ultrasonic wave is incident on a water/solid interface generally three waves are excited in the solid: one longitudinal and two shear. The complex amplitudes of the transmitted waves depend on the material properties and the angle of incidence. At incident angles higher than the first critical angle an evanescent longitudinal wave is excited near the surface. To satisfy the boundary con...

We develop complete plane wave expansions for time-dependent waves in a halfspace and use them to construct arbitrary-order local radiation boundary conditions for the scalar wave equation and equivalent first order systems. We demonstrate that, unlike other local methods, boundary conditions based on complete plane wave expansions provide nearly uniform accuracy over long time intervals. This ...

In this review, we introduce a variety of surface sensitive techniques for the study of organic thin films, and applications to organic devices. These studies include surface plasmon emission light, organic thin film transistors, combination of quartz crystal microbalance and optical waveguide spectroscopy, evaluation of alignment of liquid crystal molecules at surfaces, and biosensor applicati...

Closed-form analytical expressions and normalized charts provide the conditions for the maximum sensitivity of transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) evanescent-wave step-index waveguide sensors. The analysis covers both cases where the measurand is homogeneously distributed in the semi-infinite waveguide cover, and where it is an ultrathin film at the waveguide-cover interface.

The mode spectrum of a 3.8-cm-diameter fused-silica sphere has been studied in the vicinity of 1.06 microm. A single-frequency Nd:YAG laser was used to excite whispering gallery modes by means of evanescent wave coupling. The spectrum is in excellent agreement with predictions from Mie theory.

A plasmonic slot waveguide excited by evanescent wave coupling of a silicon strip waveguide is studied to be used as a label-free biosensor. The plasmonic slot waveguide enables strong electric-field enhancement in a small volume inducing higher interaction between the light and the analyte.
