Although often seen in mass spectra, the otherwise elusive closo-Ge(10)(2-) Zintl ion has been finally structurally characterized as coordinated to manganese in [Ge(10)Mn(CO)(4)](3-) made by the reaction of nido-Ge(9)(4-) with Mn(2)(CO)(10) in ethylenediamine. The new cluster is a bicapped square antiprism, as expected for a closo-deltahedron of 10 atoms.

A chromogenic and fluorogenic detection of aldehydes was achieved via analyte triggered opening of the deoxylactam of N-(rhodamine B)-deoxylactam-ethylenediamine (dRB-EDA). The utility of the sensor was demonstrated by fluorescent labeling of aldehyde-displaying sialoproteins on cell surfaces.

We have developed efficient copper-catalyzed additions of P(O)H compounds to alkynes, and the reactions provided the regio- and stereoselective E-alkenylphosphine oxides under catalysis of the commercially available and inexpensive copper catalyst system CuI/ethylenediamine. This finding is the first example of copper-catalyzed hydrophosphinylation of alkynes to synthesize alkenylphosphine oxides.
