We report the operation of a Bloch oscillator. The active medium was a staticvoltage driven, doped GaAs/AlAs superlattice which was electromagnetically coupled to a resonator. The oscillator produced tuneable microwave radiation (frequency ~ 60 GHz; power ~ 0.5 mW; efficiency ~ 4 %). The gain (~ 10 cm) was due to the nonlinearity mediated by miniband electrons. We also present a theory of the o...

The trapped ion frequency source is one of a class of passive atomic frequency standards that necessarily use an ancillary frequency source to interrogate the atomic transition. For passive atomic sources such as Rubidium standards, ultimate long term performance of the source is not dependent on this local oscillator, except to the extent limited by feedback gain. For the trapped ion source th...

Optomechanics and electromechanics have made it possible to prepare macroscopic mechanical oscillators in their quantum ground states, quadrature squeezed entangled states of motion. In addition coaxing ever larger more tangible objects into a regime behavior, this new capability has encouraged ideas using the processing communication information as precision force sensors operating beyond stan...

A unidirectional coupling scheme is investigated in double scroll type chaotic oscillators that reveal interesting multiscroll dynamics. Instead of using self-oscillatory systems, in this scheme, double scroll chaos from one oscillator is forced into another similar oscillator in a resting state. This coupling scheme is explored in the Chua oscillator, a modified Chua oscillator and the Lorenz ...

We show theoretically how a driven harmonic oscillator can be used as a quantum simulator for the non-Markovian damped harmonic oscillator. In the general framework, our results demonstrate the possibility to use a closed system as a simulator for open quantum systems. The quantum simulator is based on sets of controlled drives of the closed harmonic oscillator with appropriately tailored elect...

Periodic steady-state behaviour of cross-coupled LC-tank oscillator is of critical importance in ultra-low power, lowvoltage transceiver circuits. Understanding the major factors affecting amplitude, oscillation frequency and power consumption would lead to more optimised oscillator design particularly for short-range wireless transceivers. This study presents a new approach for evaluating the ...

6.1 Harmonic Oscillator Reif §6.1: A simple harmonic one-dimensional oscillator has energy levels given by E n = (n + 1 2)ω, where ω is the characteristic (angular) frequency of the oscillator and where the quantum number n can assume the possible integral values n = 0, 1, 2,. . .. Suppose that such an oscillator is in thermal contact with a heat reservoir at temperature T low enough so that kT...

Successful predator evasion is essential to the fitness of many animals. Variation in escape behaviour may be adaptive as it reduces predictability, enhancing escape success. High escape velocities and accelerations also increase escape success, but biomechanical factors likely constrain the behavioural range over which performance can be maximized. There may therefore be a trade-off between va...
