ESBLs are now a problem in hospitalized patients throughout the world. The prevalence of ESBLs among clinical isola tes varies greatly worldwide and in geographic areas and are rapidly changing over time. A total of 81 isolates of Enterobacteriaceae ESBLS, have been chosen in order to confirm ESBL-producing isolates, this confirmation was done by inhibitor potentiated disc diffusion test. Of th...
Escherichia coli bacteria with extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) type CTX-M resistance were isolated from water samples collected close to research stations in Antarctica. The isolates had bla(CTX-M-1) and bla(CTX-M-15) genotypes and sequence types (ST) indicative of a human-associated origin. This is the first record of ESBL-producing enterobacteria from Antarctica.
Certain vibriocin producers exhibited antibacterial activity throughout the Enterobacteriaceae. To examine this phenomenon, an effective technique for demonstrating vibriocin production was developed.
The global spread of class A-carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae has made the development of a simple test a desirable goal. A disc diffusion test using imipenem was 100% sensitive and 96% specific in identifying carbapenemase-producing organisms, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for the relatively labor-intensive modified Hodge test.
BACKGROUND Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the major threats to public health around the world. Besides the intense use and misuse of antimicrobial agents as the major force behind the increase in antimicrobial resistance, the exponential increase of international travel may also substantially contribute to the emergence and spread of AMR. However, knowledge on the extent to which inte...
The main objective of the study was to assess whether augmented renal clearance was a risk factor for mortality in a cohort of patients with Enterobacteriaceae sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock that all received appropriate antimicrobial therapy within 12 hours. Using a retrospective cohort from Barnes-Jewish Hospital, a 1,250-bed teaching hospital, we collected data on individuals with En...
A DNA microarray was developed to detect plasmid-mediated antimicrobial resistance (AR) and virulence factor (VF) genes in clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae and non-Enterobacteriaceae. The array was validated with the following bacterial species: Escherichiacoli (n=17); Klebsiellapneumoniae (n=3); Enterobacter spp. (n=6); Acinetobacter genospecies 3 (n=1); Acinetobacterbaumannii (n=1); Ps...
The nares represent an important bacterial reservoir for endogenous infections. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of nasal colonization by different important pathogens, the associated antimicrobial susceptibility and risk factors. We performed a prospective cohort study among 1878 nonhospitalized volunteers recruited from the general population in Germany. Participants provided nasal s...
