The worldwide dissemination of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) has become a major therapeutic concern in clinical settings. Enterobacter cloacae is a major pathogen that causes serious hospital-acquired infections. We investigated the clinical characteristics and molecular mechanisms of the first IMP-4-producing E. cloacae clinical isolates in Korea. Five carbapenemase-producin...
Two silver sulfadiazine-resistant isolates of Enterobacter cloacae obtained in a burns unit where the drug was in use were studied. These strains were resistant to elevated levels of the drug, and they were cross-resistant to silver benzoate, but not to silver nitrate. Growth of the strains in nutritionally poor defined media sensitized them to the inhibitory action of the drug. Exposure of the...
A 79-year-old Japanese woman with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma, was admitted for an evaluation of progressively worsening left lower extremity pain and purpura. Her lung cancer was complicated by radiation pneumonitis; therefore, she had been on glucocorticoid therapy for several months prior to this admission. The physical examination was remarkable for purpura on the left lower extremity (P...
Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production is an important resistance mechanism among clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae. TEM, SHV, and CTX-M are the most common ESBL genotypes among Enterobacter spp. The main aims of this study were to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and to detect ESBL-encoding genes as well as intI1 genes. One hundred twenty isolates of E. cloac...
Fluoroquinolone (FQ) agents are a potential resort to treat infection due to Enterobacteriaceae producing extended spectrum β-lactamase and susceptible to FQ. In a context of increase of non-susceptibility to carbapenems among Enterobacteriaceae, we characterized FQ resistance mechanisms in 75 Enterobacter cloacae isolates non-susceptible to ertapenem in North-Eastern France in 2012 and describ...
Enterobacter cloacae strain M12X01451 was isolated from a patient with mild diarrhea. This strain produces a novel subtype of Shiga toxin 1, Stx1e. The Stx1e-converting prophage in strain M12X01451 is stable and can infect other bacteria following induction. Here we report the complete genome sequence and annotation of strain M12X01451.
We report the complete genome sequence of Enterobacter cloacae UW5, an indole-3-acetic acid-producing rhizobacterium originally isolated from the rhizosphere of grass. The 4.9-Mbp genome has a G+C content of 54% and contains 4,496 protein-coding sequences.
An imipenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae isolate was recovered from the blood of a patient with a hematologic malignancy. Analytical isoelectric focusing, inhibitor studies, hydrolysis, induction assays, and molecular sequencing methods confirmed the presence of a NmcA carbapenem-hydrolyzing enzyme. This first report of NmcA detected in North America warrants further investigation into its di...
This report documents emergence of New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1) and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC-2) in K. pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae in South Africa. NDM-1 producers have not been described in South Africa, and this is the first instance that KPC producers have been identified in Africa. The two patients infected with these carbapenemase-producing bacteria demised.
