Efficient wireless energy transfer between two inductor-capacitor circuits has been demonstrated by applying the principles of Coupled Mode Theory to create a system of strongly-coupled, resonating magnetic fields. A new 3-D solenoid-inductor structure that is compatible with standard CMOS technology is proposed. Simulation shows excellent area efficiency of more than 80% saving over conventional planar spiral inductor. If combined with post-micromaching, a peak quality factor greater than 10 at 30GHz can be realized.
Modeling and performance of on-chip spiral inductors is presented. Y-parameters are obtained from the measured S-parameters of the inductor fabricated in 0.35-μm SOI CMOS technology. Matlab is used to get the π-equivalent circuit model parameters at each frequency point. The SOI CMOS inductor shows better performance characteristics in terms of Q-factor and self-resonance frequency.
