We find transient, transit-like dimming events within the K2 time series photometry of the young star RIK-210 in the Upper Scorpius OB association. These dimming events are variable in depth, duration, and morphology. High spatial resolution imaging revealed the star is single, and radial velocity monitoring indicated that the dimming events can not be due to an eclipsing stellar or brown dwarf...

the first step in studying dust events is the estimation of dust emission from sources. in this study, the simulations of the vertical dust flux (vdf) over iran by the mba (marticorena, bergametti, and alfaro) and shao schemes are compared. the mba scheme is energy-based and derived on the basis of energy balance between the kinetic energy of saltating particles and binding energy of the surfac...

In this work we present the first results of our imaging campaign at Keck Observatory to identify the host galaxies of “dark” gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), events with no detected optical afterglow or with detected optical flux significantly fainter than expected from the observed X-ray afterglow. We find that out of a uniform sample of 29 Swift bursts rapidly observed by the Palomar 60-inch telesco...

In this paper we present a statistical analysis on the geometrical and optical properties of Saharan dust layers observed over Athens, Greece, in a three-year period from 1 January 2004 up to 31 December 2006. The observations of the vertical aerosol profile were performed by the multi-wavelength (355-532-1064-387-607 nm) Raman lidar system of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) ...

Every year, a large number of aerosols are released from dust storms into the atmosphere, which may have potential impacts on the climate, environment, and air quality. Detecting dust aerosols and monitoring their movements and evolutions in a timely manner is a very significant task. Satellite remote sensing has been demonstrated as an effective means for observing dust aerosols. In this paper...

Within the framework of the Dust Observations for Models (DO4Models) project, the performance of three commonly used dust emissions schemes is investigated in this paper using a box model environment. We constrain the model with field data (surface and dust particle properties as well as meteorological parameters) obtained from a dry 5 lake bed with a crusted surface in Botswana during a three ...

Particulate matter was collected at Gosan, Korea, a remote location in the East China Sea, from late-March through May, 2007. Two sizes of particles, fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM10–2.5) modes, were analyzed for chemical composition. Samples were analyzed by mass, elemental and organic carbon, and inorganic ions. Organic molecular markers were also measured using solvent-extraction gas chromatogr...

Soil aeolian erodibility is the efficiency with which soil produces dust for a given meteorological forcing. Quantifying soil erodibility is crucial for forecasting dust events and the climatological distribution and forcing of dust. We use long term station observations and satellite indices of mineral dust to ascertain the role of regional topography, geomorphology, and hydrology in controlli...

In this study, aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements, from a MFR sun photometer operating in Athens, were compared with columnar dust loading estimations, from the BSC-DREAM model, during identified dust events, in order to extract the typical specific extinction crosssection for dust over the area. The selected urban environment of Athens provided us with the opportunity to investigate the ...
