A high-power 83 W cladding-pumped Tm3+-Ho3+-doped silica fiber laser is reported. Using bidirectional 793 nm diode pumping, a maximum slope efficiency of 42% was produced after a threshold launched pump power of 12 W was exceeded. The laser operated at wavelengths near 2105 nm with moderate beam quality, i.e., M2 approximately 1.5. Further power scaling of the fiber laser was limited by thermal...

We report a widely tunable single-frequency linear-cavity erbium-doped fiber laser covering both the conventional wavelength band (C-band) and the long wavelength band (L-band). The laser has low threshold, high slope efficiency and high signal-to-noise radio. A large tuning range of over 100 nm is realized by optimization of the active fiber length.

Ultrashort pulse propagation in high gain optical fiber amplifiers with normal dispersion is studied by self-similarity analysis of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with gain. An exact asymptotic solution is found, corresponding to a linearly chirped parabolic pulse which propagates self-similarly subject to simple scaling rules. The solution has been confirmed by numerical simulations and ex...

In fact, the commercial potential of the EDFA is such that the telecommunications industry has invested enormous resources in doped-fiber amplifier development over the past ten years. As a result, steady advances have occurred in fiber fabrication and design as well as in the understanding of the spectroscopic properties of rare-earth ions in a glass matrix. This research has also driven devel...

We report a laser-diode-pumped 1407-nm Raman fiber laser with an output power of 1 W. In this three-cascaded cw Raman laser, based on a single active phosphorus-doped silica fiber, for the first time to the authors' knowledge successive generation of Stokes components of essentially different frequency shifts (1330 and 490cm(-1)) has been realized. These Stokes components are associated with bo...

We reported an ultrahigh birefringence PCF with a germanium-doped elliptical core, which is fabricated in our lab using the stack-and-draw method, and an ultrahigh birefringence of 1.1×10 is obtained experimentally via FBG and Sagnac loop. A mode-locked Raman laser, using 25 m of a GeO2 doped fiber as the gain medium, is reported employing carbon nanotubes. The oscillator generates 850 ps chirped pulses, which are externally compressed to 185 ps. OCIS codes: (060.2310) Fiber optics; (140.3550) Lasers, Raman

We discuss the analytical expressions that describe the displacement field resulting from the inscription of a Bragg grating in a Ge-doped optical fiber. The equations stem from a phenomenological approach and allow calculation of the induced stresses. Our model provides an efficient tool to analyze the effects of radiation-induced density variations on the properties of fiber Bragg gratings.

Photodarkening in samarium doped germanosilicate fiber and laser by downconversion is studied. Appreciable photodarkening occurs in the fiber and we attribute the effect to color centres which are both related to Sm2O3 and GeO2. An energy level scheme has been illustrated to explain the photodarkening mechanism.
