BACKGROUND DNA damage such as double-stranded DNA breaks (DSBs) has been reported to stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis. However, the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. The major player in response to DSBs is ATM (ataxia telangiectasia mutated). Upon sensing DSBs, ATM is activated through autophosphorylation and phosphorylates a number of substrates for DNA repair, cell cycle regulation...

conclusions no association was found between tfam promoter methylation and mes. the present study suggests that the tfam promoter methylation is not associated with risk of mes. objectives the aim of study was to investigate the possible association between promoter methylation of mitochondrial transcription factor a (tfam) and mes. patients and methods dna was extracted from peripheral blood o...

Dacarbazine is an antitumor prodrug which is used for the treatment of malignant metastatic melanoma and Hodgkin’s disease. It requires initial activation in liver through an N-demethylationreaction. The active metabolite prevents the progress of disease via alkylation of guanine bases in DNA strands. In order to investigate the importance of imidazole ring and its dynamictautomerization in ant...

Progressive external ophthalmoplegia is a common clinical feature in mitochondrial disease caused by nuclear DNA defects and single, large-scale mitochondrial DNA deletions and is less frequently associated with point mutations of mitochondrial DNA. Peripheral neuropathy is also a frequent manifestation of mitochondrial disease, although its prevalence and characteristics varies considerably am...

The nuclear gene MIPl is strictly required for mitochondrial DNA replication and mitochondrial DNA polymerase activity (Genga, A., Bianchi, L., and Foury, F. (1986) J. Biol. Chem. 261,9328-9332). The MIPl gene was cloned by genetic complementation of the mipl-1 allele after cell transformation with a yeast genomic library and was mapped to the right arm of chromosome XV about 20 centimorgans d...

A new species of Cyrtodactylus is described from the southern Western Ghats India. It distinguished all collegalensis complex in colour pattern and resembles Srilankan endemic C. yakhuna overall colouration. Phylogenetic analysis mitochondrial ND2 DNA sequences indicates that most closely related to differs them by an uncorrected pairwise genetic distance 10.5–12.9%.
