Thirty patients suffering from chronic kidney disease were examined for urinary, fecal and total plasma porphyrins. Twenty patients had nitrogen retention whereas the remaining ten patients displayed normal values. Urinary coproporphyrin excretion and total plasma porphyrin levels were comparatively less pronounced in patients with nitrogen retention. Such changes in porphyrin metabolism could ...

It is well known that porphyrins can be adsorbed on to precipitates of calcium salts, and adsorption can take place under the most varying conditions. Thus, it has been shown that in certain diseases porphyrins are found to be adsorbed on to urinary sediments of calcium phosphates (Garrod, 1892; Dobriner, 1936; Sveinsson, Rimington, and Barnes, 1949) and on to the bone and tooth tissue in mammals.

The redox properties of metalloporphyrins have been studied extensively, and particular attention has been paid to the changes in oxidation states of the metaL t-3 In general, the most stable metalloporphyrins are those in which the metal is in the + 2 oxidation state. However, most of the transition metalloporphyrins show a variety of oxidation states. Thus Co(ll) porphyrins can, like the corr...

Iron(II) porphyrin nitrosyl complexes are obtained in high yields from the reaction of iron(III) porphyrins with the nitroxyl donors sodium trioxodinitrate and toluensulfohydroxamic acid. The reaction was found to proceed both in organic solvents and in aqueous media from iron(III) (meso-tetraphenyl) porphyrinate ([FeIII(TPP)]+) and iron(III) meso-tetrakis (4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrinate ([FeI...

Development of long-term implantable luminescent biosensors for subcutaneous oxygen has proved challenging due to difficulties in immobilizing a biocompatible matrix that prevents sensor aggregation yet maintains sufficient concentration for transdermal optical detection. Here, Pd-porphyrins can be used as PEG cross-linkers to generate a polyamide hydrogel with extreme porphyrin density (≈5 × 1...

Porphyrins and fullerenes are spontaneously attracted to each other. This supramolecular recognition element can be exploited to produce ordered arrays of interleaved porphyrins and fullerenes. C(60) x H(2)TpyP x Pb(NO(3))(2) x 1.5TCE (H(2)TpyP = tetra-4-pyridylporphyrin; TCE = 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane) crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/n space group and the structure has been solved to high r...

Chemoresistors working at room temperature are attractive for low-consumption integrated sensors. Previous studies show that this feature can be obtained with photoconductive porphyrins-coated ZnO nanostructures. Furthermore, variations of the porphyrin molecular structure alter both the chemical sensitivity and the photoconductivity, and can be used to define the sensor characteristics. Based ...

Simplified chemical screening tests and an apparatus to facilitate their performance have been developed for porphyrins. The tests are applicable to urine, stool, and blood. The procedures for different specimens are essentially identical and can be performed in a few minutes with a minimum of reagents and apparatus. Results obtained are usually sufficiently definitive to permit differential di...
