Diabetes is a common disease with many cutaneous manifestations encountered by dermatologists. Diabetes and the skin may be linked by association (e.g., necrobiosis lipoidica); infection; diabetic complication (e.g., neuropathic ulcer); or treatment reaction. Review of recent studies and reports focuses on pathogenesis and treatment of these many diabetic cutaneous changes.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility, technical effectiveness and limb salvage potential of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), particularly infrapopliteal, in diabetic subjects with ischaemic foot ulcer. DESIGN Intervention study with PTA in consecutive series. SETTING Six Diabetology Foot Centres and one Cardiovascular Catheterization Laboratory in Italy. SUBJECTS Two hundred ...
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of local insulin injection on granulation tissue formation in the wounds of patients with diabetic foot ulcer. Thirty-two patients with diabetic foot ulcer were randomly divided into an insulin (n=18) and a control (n=14) group. In the diabetic foot ulcer wound, the insulin group were administered insulin and the control group were admi...
Background: Foot ulceration (DFU) is a serious complication of diabetes and new techniques that can predict wound healing may prove very helpful. We tested the ability of Medical Hyperspectral Technology (HT), a novel diagnostic scanning technique which can quantify tissue oxyand deoxyhemoglobin, to predict DFU healing. Methods: Ten T1DM patients with 21 foot ulcer sites, 13 T1DM without ulcers...
The sensitivity and specificity of plantar pressure in identifying diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are relatively low, leading investigators to label peak pressure (PP) as a “poor” predictor (1). Moreover, pressure-reducing therapeutic footwear is only “meagerly” effective in preventing recurrent ulceration (2). These findings indicate that DFUs have a more complicated pathology. The purpose of thi...
The pathogenesis, incidence, complication rates, response to acid suppression and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication therapy in peptic ulcer associated with chronic disease such as liver cirrhosis, chronic renal failure, diabetes mellitus, and critically ill conditions are different from those with general population, so that the management strategies also should be differentiated. The...
Diabetes has been reported to cause an increase in offensive and decrease in defensive gastric mucosal factors, the imbalance of which can cause ulceration and delay the ulcer healing. Eugenia jambolana has been documented to have both antidiabetic and antiulcer activities. The present study evaluates the effects of ethanolic extract of E. jambolana on gastric ulcer healing and on rat gastric m...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Diabetic foot ulcer is a major complication caused by diabetes. Electrical stimulation is considered as an efficient modality of diabetic wound healing. This study aimed to investigate the effects of direct-current stimulation of cathodal on skin temperature and acceleration of ischemic diabetic foot ulcer closing. METHODS: This randomized, single-blinded, clinical tri...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of a removable cast walker compared with that of a nonremovable fiberglass off-bearing cast in the treatment of diabetic plantar foot ulcer. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Forty-five adult diabetic patients with nonischemic, noninfected neuropathic plantar ulcer were randomly assigned for treatment with a nonremovable fiberglass off-bearing cast (total contact ...
