There is a need for improved methods for detecting individuals at risk for cancer to target subsets of patients for more intensive individual screening and targeted cancer therapy and chemoprevention. One approach for accomplishing this objective is to detect premalignant molecular fingerprints in an organ at risk for cancer or to define biomarkers reflective of treatment selection and response...

Acute myeloblastic leukemia accounts for approximately 20% of acute leukemias in children. The days the microscope represented the main tool in the diagnosis and classification of Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia seem to be very far. This review summarizes the current diagnosis of this malignancy, where the morphological, cytochemical, immunophenotyping, cytogenetic and molecular characterization re...

The syndrome of sea-blue histiocyte, hepatic porphyria, and infectious mononucleosis occurring simultaneously in a young girl is described. The cytochemical staining character of the bone marrow histiocytes strongly suggested that the storage material was glycolipid. The possible relationship between the multiple disorders in the same patient is discussed.

self-reported measures of dietary intake are prone to measurement error that may obscure the relationship of diet and disease. this review addresses strategies to decrease errors during collection of dietary data and statistical approaches to deal with measurement issues once the data are collected.  examples from two us studies-- the women’s health initiative (whi) dietary modification trial a...

The Area under the ROC Curve (AUC) is a common index for evaluating the ability of the biomarkers for classification. In practice, a single biomarker has limited classification ability, so to improve the classification performance, we are interested in combining biomarkers linearly and nonlinearly. In this study, while introducing various types of loss functions, the Ramp AUC method and some of...

This study characterizes the cytochemical properties of the Golgi complex, the structure which corresponds to Golgi complex-endoplasmic reticulum-lysosomes (GERL), and the granule population in luteal cells of guinea pigs at the time of maximum progesterone secretion, in material fixed by vascular perfusion, a method particularly suited for preserving both fine structure and enzyme activity. Th...

IN studying the distribution in tissues of substances which react with reduced fuchsin, it is frequently necessary to distinguish between (a) substances which react as though they were free aldehydes; (A) substances which react as though they were aldehyde acetals; and (c) substances which react as aldehydes as a result of oxidation of precursors in the tissue. In a recent paper on the plasmal ...

Initially polypeptide hormones were assayed by their biological activity. Such conventional bioassays, however, are remarkably insensitive. For example, the Lipscomb and Nelson (1962) bioassay of corticotrophin (ACTH) cannot measure a concentration of less than about 100 pg/ml, while the normal circulating levels of the bioactive form of this hormone range from about 5 to 60 pg/ml. The introduc...
