Nine individuals with ulcerative colitis or Crohn disease grew up or lived in Plains, Montana, a 1,200-person community adjacent to the Clark Fork River near herds of free ranging Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. A 24-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) presented abdominal pain and diarrhea. No evidence for an SLE flare was obtained. Colonoscopy and microscopic biopsy examination revealed findings typical of Crohn's disease.
