This paper describes how methods and techniques developed in corpus linguistics can be used to compare and contrast samples of language use over time and across genres. A diachronic Italian corpus of nuclear physics texts belonging to different genres is collected, organised, and analysed to demonstrate the use of language in shaping one of the key sciences of the 20 century.
We define a deep syntactic representation scheme for French, which abstracts away from surface syntactic variation and diathesis alternations, and describe the annotation of deep syntactic representations on top of the surface dependency trees of the Sequoia corpus. The resulting deep-annotated corpus, named DEEP-SEQUOIA, is freely available, and hopefully useful for corpus linguistics studies ...
Modern corpora provide suitable access to the stored data. However, they are convenient rather for researchers than for students learning a foreign language and not familiar with the corpus linguistics. Therefore, we set the task of creating a corpus, which contains information on words co-occurrence, their syntactical relations and their government for the Russian language.
Corpus linguistics is a hot topic, and for good reason. Text is more available than ever before. And consequently it is easier to use corpus data more effectively than it was in the 1950s, the last time that empiricism was in fashion. Corpus linguistics is such a hot area that it is already splitting up into a number of different sub-areas. Theory and Practice in Corpus Linguistics focuses on a...

The impact of corpora is easily observable in Linguistics: it has changed the way we understand language use. However, despite their potential for impact in society, the use of corpora inside and outside the university settings in Northeast Brazil is still restricted. Rather than compiling another research corpus, the present project aims at engaging several educational communities in the use o...

In a recent paper advocating a corpus-based and probabilistic approach to grammar development, Black, Lafferty, and Roukos (1992) argue that "the current state of the art is far from being able to produce a robust parser of general English" and advocate "steady and quantifiable," empirically corpus-driven grammar development and testing. Black et al. are addressing a community in which armchair...
Software linguistics is the science of software languages. In this short paper, we sketch the general discipline of software linguistics, but our focus is on one part of it: empirical analysis of software languages. Such analysis is concerned with understanding language usage on the grounds of a corpus. In this short paper, we sketch a survey on empirical language analysis, and we argue that th...
