Use of methadone during pregnancy is associated with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), reduced head circumference as well as a slight increase in neonatal mortality and morbidity. Less is known about the effects of methadone on the visual system. CASES We report two Italian cases of nystagmus in infants born fr...
Spontaneous reports of oscillopsia are rare in cases of congenital nystagmus (CN). We examined the relationship between nystagmus waveform characteristics and oscillopsia in one such case. To reduce the patient's nystagmus, she was fitted with contact lenses. We examined the effects of tactile feedback by applying local anesthetic while she wore the lenses. When she was without lenses, we provi...
IMPORTANCE This is the first report, to our knowledge, of a child with torticollis due to saccular dysfunction. OBSERVATION An 18-month-old infant with torticollis was referred for postural imbalance and observed rotary nystagmus. The infant had undergone physical therapy treatment of left torticollis for nearly 15 months. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) were recorded ...
Congenital idiopathic nystagmus is usually associated with poor vision which has generally proved resistant to treatment. This study reports the use of contact lenses in 8 patients, 5 of whom achieved an improvement in their visual acuity of 3 lines on the Snellen's chart.
The results of squint surgery in 40 children with congenital esotropia are analysed. A 'favourable outcome' was achieved in 23 (57.5%) children. The factors affecting the final outcome including ocular alignment in the immediate postoperative period, age at the time of surgery, amblyopia, associated inferior oblique overaction, dissociated vertical deviation, latent or manifest latent nystagmus...
