This article investigates issues of controlling the amount of time during computer game play and potential solutions to help prevent excessive gaming. The study incorporates the realization of three different variants. Two screen based solutions and one based on a physical agent, outside the computer screen, provide notification and additionally even “intervention” to the user. The three realiz...

Visual Agents are software entities which assist people in performing graphical tasks. One useful and interesting graphical task is to make a textand-graphic record of a group meeting. When the recording is done live ill view of the group on a large display, such as on a whiteboard, it is a performing art which can be called "Group Graphics." During group graphics, collaboration is enhanced bec...

A locally connected quadratic Siegel Julia set has a simple explicit topological model. Such a set is computable if there exists an algorithm to draw it on a computer screen with an arbitrary resolution. We constructively produce parameter values for Siegel quadratics for which the Julia sets are non-computable, yet locally connected.

We describe work toward creating color rapid prototyping (RP) plaster models as visualization tools to support scientific research in diffusion-tensor (DT) MRI analysis. We currently give surgeons and neurologists virtual-reality (VR) applications to visualize different aspects of their brain data, but having physical representations of those virtual models allows them to review the data with a...

In this paper we describe the development of an interactive virtual environment whose objective is to improve undergraduate students’ representational fluency in surveying mathematics. One problem with teaching surveying is a general decline in the math skills of students taking surveying courses, and a decline in the students’ ability to transfer these concepts into practice in the context of ...

Decrements in the proportion of signals detected over time on task and large individual differences in performance are typical findings in studies of vigilance. This study investigates the effects of signal probability on individual differences in vigilance performance. Participants monitored stimulus events on computer displays over 2-h periods at three signal probability levels (.01, .04, & ....

Overview: An immersive language learning environment undertakes to engage the student in a two-medium communication process: a conver sation supplemented by graphical interaction in an ordinary scene on the computer screen. The fundamental rationale for such a system is that it promotes language learning by enabling the student to we the new lan guage, not analyse or translate it. In this pap...

Human response time (RT) is defined as the time delay between a signal and the starting point of human action. For example, one can measure time interval from a word appearing on a computer screen to when a participant pushes a keyboard button to indicate his or her response. Two well established empirical facts of RT are the power law tails of RT distributions [1] and 1/f noise of RT time seri...

This study examined the effects of production training with visual feedback on second language (L2) learners’ production and perception development. Native speakers of English learning intermediate Japanese practiced producing words and sentences with the CSL-Pitch Program, during which time they tried to match the pitch and durational contours of their own production to those of the models on ...

Horosphere is surface in hyperbolic space that is isometric to the Euclidean plane. In order to correctly visualize hyperbolic space we embed flat computer screen as horosphere and investigate geometry of central projection of hyperbolic space onto horosphere. We also discuss realization of hyperbolic isometries. Corresponding algorithms are implemented in Mathematica package L3toHorospere. We ...
