By mapping nucleotide sequences onto a "DNA walk", we uncovered remarkably long-range power law correlations [Nature 356 (1992) 168] that imply a new scale invariant property of DNA. We found such long-range correlations in intron-containing genes and in non-transcribed regulatory DNA sequences, but not in cDNA sequences or intron-less genes. In this paper, we present more explicit evidences ...

In the present paper, we propose ternary zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence sets with ideal correlation properties for phase shifts within the ZCZ. The proposed ternary ZCZ sequence sets can be constructed from binary mutually orthogonal complementary sets (MOCS) and ternary perfect sequences.

A large library of hen oviduct cDNA-pCR1 recombinant plasmids has been established in Escherichia coli X1776. From this library, ovomucoid cDNA and lysozyme cDNA-bearing plasmids have been identified. One of these plasmids, pMu7, yielded the sequence of the 3'-untranslated region of ovomucoid mRNA.

Integrated DNA-based nanoscale electronic devices will enable the continued realization of Moore's Law at the level of functional devices and systems. In this work, the electrical characterization of single and complementary base paired DNA has been directly measured and investigated via the use of nitrocellulose membranes. A radio frequency DAKS-3.5 was used to measure the reflection coefficie...

A new approach for simultaneously amplifying the 5' and 3' ends of a desired cDNA is described. The method combines the template-switching effect with inverse PCR, which generates the flanking 5' and 3' regions of a certain cDNA with very low or no background. It requires only minimal amounts of total RNA for the synthesis of first-strand cDNA, while the same cDNA can be used to amplify flankin...

Normalisation is an essential first step in the analysis of most cDNA microarray data, to correct for effects arising from imperfections in the technology. Loess smoothing is commonly used to correct for trends in log-ratio data. However, parametric models, such as the additive plus multiplicative variance model, have been preferred for scale normalisation, though the variance structure of micr...

Amplification of DNA in vivo occurs in intracellular environments characterized by macromolecular crowding (MMC). In vitro Polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR), however, is non-crowded, requires thermal cycling for melting of DNA strands, primer-template hybridization and enzymatic primer-extension. The temperature-optima for primer-annealing and extension are strikingly disparate which predicts pri...

What is blotting / hybridization? Blotting of nucleic acid is the central technique for hybridization studies. Double stranded DNA will denature or separate at high temperatures into single strands. When the temperature is lowered, the two strands will anneal because of the base pairing interaction between the complementary strands. If nucleotide sequences are identical or similar, complementar...
