BACKGROUND Rapid-onset obesity with hypothalamic dysfunction, hypoventilation and autonomic dysregulation (ROHHAD) is a rare disease with a high mortality rate. Although nocturnal hypoventilation (NH) is central to ROHHAD, the evolution of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is not well studied. The aim of the study was to assess early manifestations of SDB and their evolution in ROHHAD syndrome. ...

The mortality rate for respiratory failure resulting from obesity hypoventilation syndrome is high if it requires ventilator management. We describe a case of severe acute respiratory failure resulting from obesity hypoventilation syndrome (BMI, 60.2 kg/m2) successfully treated with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO). During ECMO management, a mucus plug was removed by bro...

The term obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) refers to the combination of obesity and chronic hypercapnia that cannot be directly attributed to underlying cardiorespiratory disease. Despite a plethora of potential pathophysiological mechanisms for gas exchange and respiratory control abnormalities that have been described in the obese, the etiology of hypercapnia in OHS has been only partial...

The definition of obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) proposed by Hart et al raises two questions that we have tried to answer briefly in this letter. First, previous definitions of OHS included obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA); Hart et al have excluded it. Why? OSA is present in most patients with OHS and is partly responsible for the hypercapnia. We believe that it is useful to include it in...

We report the case of a 7 year old girl who developed central hypoventilation following pertussis and who was treated by negative pressure ventilation using a new portable tank respirator. We believe this is the first reported case of central hypoventilation following pertussis successfully treated by intermittent negative pressure ventilation.
