The recent revival of interest in the use of 5% or 7% carbogen in the treatment of carbon-monoxide poisoning has prompted the description of four unusual cases in which gross hyperventilation occurred. The investigation of these cases was not very thorough, but such cases are seen so seldom that it is felt that even this incomplete report may be of value in stimulating further research. Hyperve...
Hyperoxia causes cell injury and death associated with reactive oxygen species formation and inflammatory responses. Recent studies show that hyperoxia-induced cell death involves apoptosis, necrosis, or mixed phenotypes depending on cell type, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Using murine lung endothelial cells, we found that hyperoxia caused cell death by apoptosis involving...
Analysis of the carbon monoxide content of expired air is now a frequently used technique in population studies. Its close correlation with the blood concentration of carboxyhaemoglobin was first demonstrated by Jones, Ellicott, Cadigan, and Gaensler in 1958. Studies in the United Kingdom (Tyrer, 1964) and the United States (Ringold et al., 1962; Goldsmith, Schuette, and Novick, 1963) have show...
We explore the possibility of preparation of Pt3M (M = Fe, Ni and Co) nanocubes using carbon monoxide as an alternative protocol under different experimental conditions. The results suggest that the sole carbon monoxide flow at ambient pressure can enable the formation of binary Pt-M nanocrystals, but it is inadequate to facilitate the formation of Pt3M nanocubes in the given system under speci...
Searching MEDLINE and government databases (e.g. the Defense Technical Information Centre, the National Technical Information Service, and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society database) were searched using the terms 'carbon monoxide', 'carbon monoxide poisoning', 'delayed neurologic sequelae', 'hyperbaric oxygen', 'normobaric oxygen' and 'hyperbaric therapy'. Bibliographies of retrieved ...
Acetylene gas welding of district heating pipes can result in exposure to high concentrations of carbon monoxide. A fatal case due to intoxication is described. Measurements of carbon monoxide revealed high levels when gas welding a pipe with closed ends. This fatality and these measurements highlight a new hazard, which must be promptly prevented.
INTRODUCTION Many cases of carbon monoxide poisoning in Taiwan are due to burning charcoal. Nevertheless, few reports have analyzed the mortality rate of these patients who survive to reach a hospital and die despite intensive treatment. Therefore, this study examined the clinical features, physiological markers, and outcomes after carbon monoxide poisoning and the associations between these fi...
In clinical practice, an elevated carbon monoxide (CO) transfer coefficient (KCO) and restrictive ventilatory defect are taken as features of respiratory muscle weakness (RMW). However, the authors hypothesised that both pattern and severity of RMW effect gas transfer and lung volumes. Measurements of CO transfer and lung volumes were performed in patients with isolated diaphragm weakness (n=10...
Vertical columns of CO have been retrieved from SCIAMACHY/ENVISAT short wave/near infrared (∼2.3 µm) nadir spectra using the Weighting Function Modified (WFM) DOAS retrieval algorithm. WFM-DOAS has been applied to a small spectral fitting window located in SCIAMACHY's channel 8 (∼2365 nm) covering four CO absorption lines. The 5 focus of this paper is to demonstrate that quantitative informatio...
