We consider the offline sorting buffers problem. Input to this problem is a sequence of requests, each specified by a point in a metric space. There is a “server” that moves from point to point to serve these requests. To serve a request, the server needs to visit the point corresponding to that request. The objective is to minimize the total distance travelled by the server in the metric space...

Comparative Performance Analysis of k-Ary n-Cube Topologies with Multiple Virtual Channels and Finite Size Buffers N. Alzeidi, M. Ould-Khaoua, L. M. Mackenzie Computing Science Department, University of Glasgow, UK {zeidi, mohamed, lewis}@dcs.gla.ac.uk Abstract Comparative performance studies of k-ary n-cubes under different design constraints and operating conditions have been widely reported ...

We study the dynamic assignment of cross-trained servers to stations in understaffed lines with finite buffers. Our objective is to maximize the production rate. We identify optimal server assignment policies for systems with three stations, two servers, different flexibility structures, and either deterministic service times and arbitrary buffers or exponential service times and small buffers....

A conventional Network-on-Chip (NoC) router uses input buffers to store in-flight packets. These buffers improve performance, but consume significant power. It is possible to bypass these buffers when they are empty, reducing dynamic power, but static buffer power remains, and when buffers are utilized, dynamic buffer power remains as well. To improve energy efficiency, bufferless deflection ro...

At the frog neuromuscular junction, under physiological conditions, the direct measurement of calcium currents and of the concentration of intracellular calcium buffers-which determine the kinetics of calcium concentration and neurotransmitter release from the nerve terminal-has hitherto been technically impossible. With the aim of quantifying both Ca(2+) currents and the intracellular calcium ...

Abstract We estimate the economic cost of nutrient reductions from riparian buffers in two counties western Maryland. The costs and gains for farmers are estimated establishing under Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program. For reductions, we utilize nitrogen phosphorus mitigation loads Chesapeake Bay Watershed Model own estimates our synoptic studies. show that reducing nutrients vary based o...

Data center networks are required to have high energy efficiency as well as high communication performance. One approach to achieving these requirements is to use a hybrid optoelectronic router, which has optical packet switching functionality and packet buffering in an electronic domain. These hybrid optoelectronic routers can cut the power of electronic buffers while maintaining optical packe...

Increasing the nitrate (N) concentration in the rooting substrate above deficiency decreased stomatal conductance and leaf growth rate compared with sufficient N in maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) growing in drying substrate. Novel effects were detected when N in the non-deficient range was supplied directly to the xylem of detached shoots: concentrations above 2.0 mol m-3 KNO3 reduced transpirat...

Sediment is a major agricultural pollutant threatening water quality. Vegetated buffers, including vegetative filter strips, riparian buffers, and grassed waterways, are best management practices (BMPs) installed in many areas to filter sediments from tailwaters, and deter sediment transport to water bodies. Along with reducing sediment transport, the filters also help trap sediment bound nutri...

We show global uniqueness of the solution to a class of constrained variational problems, using scaling properties. This is used to establish the essential uniqueness of solutions of a large deviations problem in multiple dimensions. The result is motivated by models of buffers, and in particular the probability of, and typical path to overflow in the limit of small buffers, which we analize.
