BACKGROUND Safety of blood donors rest on withdrawing only appropriate quantities of blood. Adjusting the volumes drawn according to the average blood volumes of any population can ensure this. This requires knowledge of total blood volume of donors, which should ideally be measured by standard methods or derived by alternate suitable method. This observational, cross sectional study was undert...

Three-dimensional digital models of 16 different sauropods were used to examine the scaling relationship between metabolism and surface areas of the whole body, the neck, and the tail in an attempt to see if the necks could have functioned as radiators for the elimination of excess body heat. The sauropod taxa sample ranged in body mass from a 639 kg juvenile Camarasaurus to a 25 t adult Brachi...

Recent data demonstrate a possible mortality benefit in traumatically injured patients when given subcutaneous recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO). The purpose of this report is to examine the effect of rhEPO on mortality and transfusion in burn patients. We conducted a review of burn patients (greater than 30% total body surface area, intensive care unit [ICU] days greater than 15) treate...

The aim of this article was to assess the oxygen-uptake efficiency slope (OUES) throughout the age span of 7 to 18 years. One hundred fourteen healthy children (58 boys and 56 girls) exercised on a treadmill by means of a modified Balke protocol. The OUES grew in a nonlinear pattern with age, and it appeared to be significantly higher in boys than in girls. There was a very strong correlation b...

BACKGROUND Laser-Doppler imaging (LDI) of cutaneous blood flow is beginning to be used by burn surgeons to predict the healing time of burn wounds; predicted healing time is used to determine wound treatment as either dressings or surgery. In this paper, we do a statistical analysis of the performance of the technique. METHODS We used data from a study carried out by five burn centers: LDI wa...

Because data on the epidemiology of psoriasis in central and eastern Europe are scarce, a survey was carried out among dermatologists in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The objective of the survey was to determine disease severity, treatment patterns, proportions of dermatologists considering their patients' current treatments un...

Burns due to explosions of various types of inflammable dust have been reported, including coal dust, flour and grain dust. A 33-year-old worker was burned over 33 per cent of his body surface area in a sawdust explosion. Recovery was uneventful. This is the first reported case due to this mechanism as far as we have been able to ascertain.

1. Urine was collected in five healthy men over 10--14 days, with fasting blood samples on days 1, 5 and 10, whilst they consumed a standard creatine-free diet, which was quantitatively related to their body surface area. 2. The urinary excretion of 3-methylhistidine fell to a plateau by day 5 in all subjects. Myofibrillar protein catabolic rate calculated from the mean value of 3-methylhistidi...

In adults, calculation of left ventricular mass (LVM) has been shown to give higher values when based on M-mode measurements obtained by the second-harmonic imaging (SHI) technique than with the older fundamental imaging (FI) technique. No information is available in paediatric subjects. This study, therefore, compares LVM calculated from measurements obtained with SHI and FI in 14 children, ag...
