Nanowires of a pyridyl-functionalized iridium complex are transformed into microcubes as a result of hydrogen-bond-assisted second-sphere coordination between pyridyl groups and monovalent anions of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H2BTC(-)). The mechanochromic compound 1 forms green-emitting crystals (1g) and blue-emitting crystals (1b) that exhibit two intriguing responses to mechanical stimulation. Upon mechanical stimulation, the emission color of 1g does not change but its crystalline structure does. Conversely, 1b shows a clear emission shift, but it retains its molecular arrangement upon grinding.

An ultrathin (few nanometer) polymer spacer layer is softened by local optical heating and restructured by strong capillary forces, which increase the gap between the plasmonic metal components. This results in a continuous blue-shift of the coupled plasmon from near infrared to visible with a tuning range of >150 nm that can be tightly controlled by adjusting either irradiation time or power.

A novel ratiometric fluorescent probe for oxalic acid was designed and synthesized, based on the zinc-containing [DAQZ@2Zn(2+)] complex. It shows highly selective "on-off" fluorescence changes with a more than 20 nm blue shift in wavelength for oxalic acids in aqueous solution. Moreover, it can fluorescently respond to oxalic acid in living cells.
