Anti-Helicobacter pylori activities were determined by agar dilution, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and cell proliferation assays following treatment with various grape extracts. Muscadine grape skin possessed the strongest activity, followed by grape synergy (skin and seed) and seed, suggesting that higher phenolic levels do not necessarily determine overall anti-H. pylori efficacy.

The present study is focused on the investigation of in vitro angiogenic potential of grape seed extract (GSE). Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) in culture were used to assess the effect of GSE on proliferation, survival, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) secretion and capillary tube formation. Our data show that GSE significantly inhibited cell growth (< or =91%, P<0.001) and cell...

The antioxidant activity of several Malaysian plant extracts was analyzed simultaneously with their pro-oxidant capacity. This ratio represents an index (ProAntidex) of the net free radical scavenging ability of whole plant extracts. We observed that ethanolic extracts of Nephelium lappaceum peel, Fragaria x ananassa leaf, Lawsonia inermis leaf, Syzygium aqueum leaf and grape seed had a lower P...

Plant-derived polyphenols have been shown to influence bone turnover and bone properties in the estrogen-depleted state. We used a crossover design in ovariectomized rats (n = 16 rats for each diet) to investigate the effect of supplementation of two doses each of blueberry, plum, grape, grape seed extract, and resveratrol on bone. We tested the aglycon and glucoside forms of genistein to quant...

The antimicrobial effects of red wine and its inherent components on oral microbiota were studied by using a 5-species biofilm model of the supragingival plaque that includes Actinomyces oris, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus mutans and Veillonella dispar. Microbiological analysis (CFU counting and confocal laser scanning microscopy) of the biofilms after the applica...

Objective: This study was done on 40 male wistar rats to evaluate the curative and protective effect of grape seeds extract on oxidative damage, inflammatory and apoptotic insult on lung tissue induced by cadmium chloride toxicity. Materials and Methods: The rats were classified to control group (group I), cadmium chloride group (group II), grape seeds extract group (group III) and mixture of g...

The grape (Vitis vinifera L.) posses several remedy effects. In this study, the anti limnatis nilotica effect of methanolic extract of Vitis vinifera L. plant as well as niclosamide were investigated by anti-leech assay. Distilled water selected as placebo. The mean death time of leeches in groups treated with niclozomide for mature and immature form were 15.4 and 10.1 minutes, respectively. Th...

Thaumatin-like proteins (TLPs) and chitinases are the main constituents of so-called protein hazes which can form in finished white wine and which is a great concern of winemakers. These soluble pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins are extracted from grape berries. However, their distribution in different grape tissues is not well documented. In this study, proteins were first separately extracte...

Trans-resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is naturally present in the skin of grapes and therefore is expected to occur in grape products. Recently, there has been a renewal of interest in wine as medical treatment for various disorders. In this study, berry skins of five red grape varieties were analysed at weekly intervals for trans-resveratrol production, during 2012 and 2013 harv...

Using a sequential in vitro/in vivo approach, we tested the ability of botanical extracts to influence biomarkers associated with bone resorption and bone formation. Pomegranate fruit and grape seed extracts were found to exhibit anti-resorptive activity by inhibiting receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) expression in MG-63 cells and to reduce IL-1β-stimulated calvarial (45)Ca...
