Nowadays, contamination of heavy metals in aquatic ecosystems is one of the major world problems in developing and developed countries. Among various aquatics, shellfish species, especially bivalves can be used as bioindicator, because of purification system, potential bioavailability of impurities in environment as well as accumulation of some heavy metals in their body. Among bivalves, oyst...

Molluscs, having a number of relatively large species, offer an opportunity to study general circulation dynamics in an open type of circulatory system. Certain aspects of their cardiac function, such as filtration through the heart wall, are found only in molluscan hearts. Other features, such as the myogenic nature of the heart and the pressure dynamics, are of more general interest. Few inve...

Assessments of the impact of construction, operation, and removal of large infrastructures and other human activities on the marine environment are limited because they do not fully quantify the background baseline conditions and relevant scales of natural variability. Baselines as defined in Environmental Impact Assessments typically reflect the status of the environment and its variability dr...

Recent studies have quantified extensively metal assimilation efficiency from ingested food sources in aquatic invertebrates. Metal absorption efficiency (alpha) from the dissolved phase is analogous to metal assimilation efficiency, but it remains poorly defined and quantified. In this study, the alpha of four trace metals [Cd, Cr(VI), Se(IV), and Zn] was determined in three species of marine ...

Diarrhetic shellfish poisoning is a gastrointestinal illness caused by consumption of bivalves contaminated with dinophysistoxins. We report an illness cluster in the United States in which toxins were confirmed in shellfish from a commercial harvest area, leading to product recall. Ongoing surveillance is needed to prevent similar illness outbreaks.
