The current depth and breadth of experience in hip resurfacing in Canadian academic centers is not well known. This study endeavors to increase awareness of the prevalence of programs and current experience in a select number of representative teaching centers by examining the learning curve of high-volume surgeons. A questionnaire was sent to all academic centers in Canada to identify the volu...
BACKGROUND No information is available concerning patients' sports activity after hip resurfacing arthroplasty. HYPOTHESIS Patients treated by hip resurfacing arthroplasty will be able to achieve a high level of sports activity. STUDY DESIGN Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS We surveyed 112 patients by postal questionnaire to determine their sporting activities at a mean of 23.5 ...
The Birmingham hip resurfacing (BHR) arthroplasty is a metal-on-metal prosthesis for which no medium- or long-term results have been published. Despite this, it is increasing in popularity as an alternative to stemmed prostheses for younger patients. Since the fixation of the socket is conventional, the major concern is long-term failure of the femoral component. This can be predicted by the us...
We describe a patient who sustained a peri-prosthetic fracture of the femoral neck two weeks after undergoing a resurfacing procedure for osteoarthritis of the hip. The fracture was minimally displaced and a satisfactory outcome was obtained following conservative treatment.
Previous data on the survivorship of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) implant have come from design surgeons and large national databases outside of the United States, and there is a lack of reported outcomes of surface replacement arthroplasty from US centers. A retrospective study was undertaken of 1271 hips treated with a BHR system (Smith & Nephew, Memphis, Tennessee) between June 2006 ...
We reviewed the results of 25 consecutive patients who underwent revision of a hip resurfacing prosthesis to a total hip replacement. Revisions were performed for recurrent pain and effusion, infection and proximal femoral fractures. Both components were revised in 20 cases. There were 12 male and 13 female patients with average time to revision of 34.4 and 26.4 months respectively. The mean fol...
We report a 12- to 15-year implant survival assessment of a prospective single-surgeon series of Birmingham Hip Resurfacings (BHRs). The earliest 1000 consecutive BHRs including 288 women (335 hips) and 598 men (665 hips) of all ages and diagnoses with no exclusions were prospectively followed-up with postal questionnaires, of whom the first 402 BHRs (350 patients) also had clinical and radiolo...
Background and purpose - Hip resurfacing (HR) is a treatment option promoted for hip arthritis in young and active patients. However, adverse reactions to metal are a concern and the search for non-metallic bearing options proceeds. We present the first clinical study performed in patients using a newly developed hydrophilic polymer-on-polymer hip resurfacing device. Patients and methods - Afte...
