An experimental technique for preparation and image reconstruction of excitation waves in cylindrical Belousov-Zhabotinsky media is developed. It is found that pairs of spiral rotors generate ring-shaped waves by wave collisions which occur approximately 180± behind the pacemakers. Numerical simulations reveal radius-dependent competition between common vortices and rotating planar waves. This ...

We investigate growth of the excitable Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction in chaotic, time-varying flows. In slow flows, reacted regions tend to lie near vortex edges, whereas fast flows restrict reacted regions to vortex cores. We show that reacted regions travel toward vortex centers faster as flow speed increases, but nonreactive scalars do not. For either slow or fast flows, reaction is promoted...

We report results on chemical wave propagation obtained from experiments with a modified Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction. Under pseudo-onedimensional reaction conditions, excitation pulses either form closely stacked, stable wavepackets or merge with a slow leading pulse in front-to-back collisions. Moreover, wave stacking can involve the cascading formation of metastable clusters. These phenomen...

Using computational modeling, we show that self-oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) gels can both emit and sense a chemical signal and thus drive neighboring gel pieces to spontaneously self-aggregate, so that the system exhibits autochemotaxis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the closest system to the ultimate self-recombining material, which can be divided into separated parts and the...

A gas free analogue of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction catalysed by ferroin and encapsulated in phospholipid stabilised vesicles is reported. A reaction mixture which exhibits spontaneous oscillation and excitation transfer between vesicles was formulated. By adjusting the reagent concentrations a quiescent state with fewer spontaneous oscillations was achieved. Using relatively low power las...

The transition from spiral waves to defect-mediated turbulence was studied in a spatial open reactor using Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. The experimental results show a new mechanism of the transition from spirals to spatiotemporal chaos, in which the gradient effects in the three-dimensional system are essential. The transition scenario consists of two stages: first, the effects of gradients ...

We investigate the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction in an attempt to establish a basis for computation using chemical oscillators coupled via inhibition. The system consists of BZ droplets suspended in oil. Interdrop coupling is governed by the non-polar communicator of inhibition, Br2. We consider a linear arrangement of three droplets to be a NOR gate, where the center droplet is the output...

Abstract – Using numerical and experimental tools, we study the motion of two coupled spiral cores in a light-sensitive variant of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. Each core resides on a separate two-dimensional domain, and is coupled to the other by light. When both spirals have the same sense of rotation, the cores are attracted to a circular trajectory with a diameter quantized in integer ...
