Diverticulosis of the jejunum is a rare finding (0.06 to 1.3%). Possible complications are bacterial overgrowth, malabsorption, bleeding, mechanical obstruction, volvulus and perforation. At present only one case report on familial jejunal diverticulosis has been published. We describe three patients with jejunal diverticulosis within one family, which might suggest inheritance.

INTRODUCTION Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder characterized by symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation, that are not attributable to structural or biochemical abnormalities (1). Although several conceptual models of IBS pathogenesis have been suggested, including visceral hypersensitivity, abnormal intestinal motility, ...
Intestinal bypass surgery, particularly jejuno-ileal bypass surgery, performed for the purpose of weight reduction may cause an unexpected exacerbation of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Here, we report a case of NASH caused by small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, which developed after jejuno-colic bypass surgery and resolved dramatically after surgical correction.
The era of automation in haematology, although improving the accuracy and precision of results, has also introduced the laboratory haematologist to a vast array of spurious parameters. The identification of these results is important so that inappropriate management decisions are avoided. The case presented here illustrates a spuriously raised automated platelet count resulting from bacterial o...
Direct detection of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in mixed cultures by DNA filter assay was affected by the presence of other bacteria in the cultures. By shortening incubation to 6 h, bacterial overgrowth was minimized, allowing direct detection of ETEC in stools or mixed cultures initially containing 0.2 to 3% ETEC.
