This study evaluates the ability to track grassland growth phenology in the Swiss Alps with NOAA-16 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series. Three growth parameters from 15 alpine and subalpine grassland sites were investigated between 2001 and 2005: Melt-Out (MO), Start Of Growth (SOG), and End Of Growth (EOG).We tried to estim...
A method is presented to allow for operational atmospheric correction of AVHRR channels 1 and 2 data. The method is based on radiative transfer calculations and subsequent application of Artificial Neural Network techniques. The method is applied to derive atmospherically corrected NDVI maps of the river Elbe catchment area in Central Europe.
On the basis of AVHRR GIMMS NDVI and MODIS NDVI, we constructed monthly NDVI sequences covering Northeast China from 1982 to 2009 using a per-pixel unary linear regression model. The expanded NDVI passed the consistency check and were well used for analysis. The monthly NDVI trends were highly correlated with climatic changes. Spatially averaged NDVI in summer exhibited a downward trend with
This paper presents a algorithm for the geometric correction of NOAA AVHRR data by using polynomial scan and pixel function. Preprocessings including tangent correction and earth curvature correction can be reduced the order of these functions. Using this method, it was possible to make the geometrically corrected image very fast. Also the precision of geometric correction is discussed.
The 40+ years-long sea surface temperature (SST) dataset from 4 km Global Area Coverage (GAC) data of the Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR/2s and/3s) flown onboard ten NOAA satellites (N07/09/11/12/14/15/16/17/18/19) has been created under AVHRR GAC SST Reanalysis 2 (RAN2) Project. were reprocessed with Clear Sky Processor for Ocean (ACSPO) enterprise system. Two products are re...
The large archive of NOAA AVHRR data, covering more than 25 years, bears the potential to detect aerosol trends. However, remote sensing of aerosol optical depth over land is a difficult task, because the aerosol signal gets weaker over bright surface targets and the quality of the retrieval mainly depends on the quality of the surface reflectance estimate. In this study, we test the sensitivit...
Leaf area index (LAI) is one of the surface parameters that has importance in climate, weather, and ecological studies, and has been routinely estimated from remote sensing measurements. Canada-wide LAI maps are now being produced using cloud-free Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery every 10 days at 1-km resolution. The archive of these products began in 1993. LAI maps at t...
A multispectral, multiresolution (MSMR) method is developed for analyzing scenes of overlapping cloud layers. The MSMR method is applied to data from the NOAA 11 advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and the high-resolution infrared radiometer sounder (HIRS-2). The data are from a nighttime oceanic scene in which a semitransparent cirrus veil overlays a large-scale stratus cloud. Low...
