An efficient in vitro propagation system for an elite clone EC-353508 of Artemisia annua L., an important antimalarial drug plant has been developed. The best organogenic response, including adventitious multiple shoots and their elongation, was obtained when nodal explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 10μM 2-isopentenyl adenine (2iP). An average of 17.7±0.88 shoots with an aver...

Humans around the globe probably discovered natural remedies against disease and cancer by trial and error over the millennia. Biomolecular archaeological analyses of ancient organics, especially plants dissolved or decocted as fermented beverages, have begun to reveal the preliterate histories of traditional pharmacopeias, which often date back thousands of years earlier than ancient textual, ...

The study was aimed to assess the molluscicidal and cercaricidal potential of Artemisia annua leaves under laboratory conditions. The LC50 values of different crude extracts were tested for their molluscicidal activity against immature (Group I), young mature (Group II) and adult (group III) stages of Indoplanorbis exustus using Probit analysis. Snail size and different extracts of Artemisia an...

In order to determine the effect of climatic factors on distribution of Artemisia aucheri and Artemisia sieberi in Isfahan province, thirty nine most important climatic elements in ecological condition of these species were selected. Using a factor analysis method, the most important factors in distribution of these species were determined. These factors which cover 92.3% of the total variance ...

Habitat fragmentation can change the community composition of species in remnant habitat patches. We studied the impacts of fragmentation by agriculture on the bird community in heavily fragmented areas of the sagebrush shrubsteppe in western North America. We examined whether bird communities in sagebrush habitat near orchards and vineyards were different from the community in interior sagebru...

Malaria, known as the "fevers," has been treated for over three thousand years in China with extracts of plants of the genus Artemisia (including Artemisia annua, A. opiacea, and A. lancea) from which the active compound is artemisin, a sesquiterpene that is highly effective in the treatment of the disease, especially against young forms of the parasite. South American Indians in the seventeent...

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) populations have declined from 66 to 92% during the last 30 years in Canada, where they are listed as endangered. We used radiotelemetry to examine greater sage-grouse nest and brood habitat use in Alberta and assess the relationship between habitat and the population decline. We also identified the patch size at which sage-grouse were selecting n...

Five new polyol monoterpenes (1-5) and seven new sesquiterpene lactones (6-12), along with five previously identified compounds, were isolated from the aerial parts of Artemisia suksdorfii. The structures of the new compounds were established by high-field NMR techniques (1H, 13C, 1H-1H DEPT, COSY, HMQC, and HMBC) and in case of 6 confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis ssp. occidentalis Hook) encroachment into mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata spp. vaseyana (Rydb.) Beetle) steppe has reduced livestock forage production, increased erosion risk, and degraded sagebrush-associated wildlife habitat. Western juniper has been successfully controlled with partial cutting followed by prescribed burning the next fall, ...
