Caries is the most common cause of pulp-periapical disease. When the pulp tissue involved in caries becomes irreversibly inflamed and progresses to necrosis, the treatment option is root canal therapy because the infected or non-infected necrotic pulp tissue in the root canal system is not accessible to the host's innate and adaptive immune defense mechanisms and antimicrobial agents. Therefore...
Oral biofilm challenge regulates the RANKL-OPG system in periodontal ligament and dental pulp cells.
Inflammatory bone destruction triggered by oral bacteria is a hallmark of chronic and apical periodontitis. Receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) activates bone resorption, whereas osteoprotegerin (OPG) blocks its action. These are members of the tumor necrosis factor ligand and receptor families, respectively. Although individual oral pathogens are known to regulate RANKL and OPG expressi...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the periapical repair after root canal treatment in the teeth of dogs using CT and conventional radiography and to compare these findings with the gold standard microscopic evaluation. STUDY DESIGN The animals were divided into three groups according to endodontic treatment performed: Group 1, single-visit endodontic treatment in teeth without apical periodontitis; Group...
INTRODUCTION This clinical study investigated the levels of metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) and respective forms (MMP/TIMP complexes) in apical periodontitis to determine their networks in the development of clinical/radiographic features, thus quantifying the levels of endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides) present in primarily infected root canals with apical periodont...
Multiple internal root resorption is a rare outcome of chronic irreversible pulpitis. In some cases, a chronic apical periodontitis can be later on associated. Usually, the conventional intraoral radiograph is mandatory in diagnosis but only CBCT proved to detect the true location, shape and size of resorptive defect and, if present, a perforation generated by resorption extension through the c...
Epidemiology is the study of disease distribution and factors determining or affecting it. Likewise, endodontic epidemiology can be defined as the science of studying the distribution pattern and determinants of pulp and periapical diseases; specially apical periodontitis. Although different study designs have been used in endodontics, researchers must pay more attention to study designs with h...
The aim of this report is to describe the treatment of two mandibular incisors of the same patient with apical periodontitis following dental trauma. Tooth 31 was treated by single-visit endodontic therapy while tooth 41 was treated by multiple-visit endodontic therapy. A 16-month postoperative radiograph was taken and showed repair.

INTRODUCTION This in vivo study compared the antibacterial effects of 2 instrumentation systems in root canal-treated teeth with apical periodontitis. METHODS Forty-eight teeth with a single root and a single canal showing post-treatment apical periodontitis were selected for this study. For retreatment, teeth were randomly divided into 2 groups according to the instrumentation system used: S...
