aortic dissection occurs when a tear develops in the wall of the aorta, which is rare in the young population. this fatal disorder is hard to diagnose, especially in young patients. we present the case of aortic dissection in a 15-year-old boy referred to the emergency department of yazd university of medical sciences in november 2015. the patient presented to our department with sudden acute c...

A patient who had endocarditis on a prosthetic aortic valve and who had undergone two aortic valvular replacements developed classic angina pectoris. Cardiac catheterization revealed an aneurysm of the left sinus of Valsalva, which constricted a proximal segment of the left circumflex coronary artery during systole. This type of dynamic coronary arterial narrowing has not been previously descri...

Clinical signs of aortic regurgitation were noted after birth in an infant who died suddenly at the age of 18 months. Congenital malformation of the aortic root with an aneurysm of the right aortic sinus and disconnection of the corresponding cusp were found at necropsy.

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), rapid sequence spiral computed tomography with intravenous contrast (CT), and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) have become increasingly useful in the evaluation and diagnosis of acute dissection of the ascending aorta. These diagnostic modalities are fast, safe, non-invasive, and highly accurate, with sensitivity and specificity approaching 100%. 1 A...

The association of a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) with abnormalities of the proximal thoracic aorta, including dilatation, aneurysm and dissection, has been previously described, leading to the hypothesis of a common underlying developmental defect involving the aortic valve and the aortic wall. Consequently, any patient with BAV should receive a careful assessment not only of the valve function...

Huge unruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysms is rarely observed. We report a 32-year-old woman presenting with exertional dyspnea in which a giant unruptured noncoronary sinus of Valsalva aneurysm was detected after echocardiography. The aneurysm was surgically repaired and the aortic and mitral valves were replaced.

There are certain aortic root pathologies where only one or two of the aortic sinuses are diseased. We aimed to evaluate our mid-term results after a partial remodeling of the aortic root. A total of 220 patients underwent a valve-sparing operation at our institution. In 29 patients (mean age: 62+/-10 years), two (n=22) or one (n=7) native aortic sinuses were preserved. Operative indication was...

We report a rare case of sinus of Valsalva aneurysm of left aortic sinus, which was bulging into left atrium (LA) distorting mitral valve and rupture into the left ventricle with severe aortic regurgitation in a 25 years old male patient. Due to the rupture, both aortic and mitral valves were irreparable and required a double valve replacement along with the closure of the neck of the aneurysma...

BACKGROUND Although repair of a supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) can be performed with low mortality rates, surgery for the complex form of SVAS continues to be associated with a high incidence of residual stenosis. CASE PRESENTATION The patient was referred to our hospital at 1 month of age and was diagnosed with aortic valve stenosis (AS) by using echocardiography. Cardiac catheterizati...

A 83-year-old Caucasian male, known with chronic pulmonary disease, mild renal insufficiency, hypertension and epilepsy, was admitted to our tertiary referral centre for aortic valve replacement because of symptomatic severe aortic stenosis. Echocardiography showed aortic stenosis with a peak gradient of 100 mmHg (aortic valve area 0.5 cm2) and a hypertrophic left ventricle with moderate systol...
