We present a comparison of the results of the ASCA survey of LMXB with the Inogamov & Sunyaev theory of accretion flow spreading on the surface of neutron stars. The ASCA survey of LMXB of Church & Ba lucińska-Church (2001) revealed a systematic variation of the luminosity of blackbody emission from the neutron star spanning 3 decades in total X-ray luminosity suggesting that the level of black...

Relevant component analysis (RCA) is a recently proposed metric learning method for semi-supervised learning applications. It is a simple and efficient method that has been applied successfully to give impressive results. However, RCA can make use of supervisory information in the form of positive equivalence constraints only. In this paper, we propose an extension to RCA that allows both posit...

I re-examine mass estimates of the Coma cluster from pre-ASCA X-ray spectral observations. A large range of model dark matter distributions are examined, under the assumptions of hydrostatic equilibrium and spherical symmetry, to determine the widest possible allowed range on the total mass of the cluster. Within a radius of 1 Mpc, the total cluster mass is tightly constrained to be (6.2 ± 0.9)...

The Seyfert 1 galaxy 1E 1615+061 was observed to display a very steep (Γ ' 4.2) and intense soft X-ray spectrum during a HEAO-1 A2 observation in the 1978. Such an exceptionally soft X-ray state has never been observed subsequently, but the source has continued to exhibit a large (up to a factor 6) range of X-ray intensity variability. The overall UV/Xray spectrum of this source, observed durin...

We have reanalysed the ASCA X-ray spectrum of the bright symbiotic star CH Cyg, which exhibits apparently distinct hard and soft X-ray components. Our analysis demonstrates that the soft X-ray emission can be interpreted as scattering of the hard X-ray component in a photo-ionised medium surrounding the white dwarf. This is in contrast to previous analyses in which the soft X-ray emission was f...

Using RXTE and ASCA data, we investigate the roles played by occultation and absorption in the X-ray spin pulse profile of the Intermediate Polar PQ Gem. From the X-ray light curves and phase-resolved spectroscopy, we find that the intensity variations are due to a combination of varying degrees of absorption and the accretion regions rotating behind the visible face of the white dwarf. These o...

We have mapped the high-redshift (z = 0.546) cluster Cl 0016+16 with the Ryle Telescope at 15 GHz. The Sunyaev–Zel’dovich decrement is clearly detected, and resolved. We combine our data with an X-ray image from ROSAT, and a gas temperature from ASCA to estimate the Hubble Constant H0 = 69+21 −16 km s −1 Mpc−1 for an ΩM = 1.0 cosmology or H0 = 84+25 −19 km s −1 Mpc−1 for ΩM = 0.3 and ΩΛ = 0.7.

We report the results of two Chandra ACIS-S observations from February and August 2003 of the highly X-ray variable Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy RX J2217.9–5941. Observations spanning the time from the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) through an ASCA observation in 1998 indicate apparently monotonically decreasing flux by a factor of 30. The Chandra observations reveal increased emission over that s...

We present the first results from an XMM-Newton serendipitous medium-deep survey, which covers nearly three square degrees. We detect a total of 1022, 495 and 100 sources, down to minimum fluxes of about 5.9× 10−16, 2.8× 10−15 and 6.2× 10−15 erg cm−2 s−1, in the 0.5-2, 2-10 and 4.5-10 keV band, respectively. In the soft band this is one of the largest samples available to date and surely the la...

We discuss the hard X-ray properties of the Seyfert galaxy Ton S 180, based upon the analysis of ASCA data. We find the X-ray flux varied by a factor ∼ 2 on a time scale of a few thousand seconds. The source showed significantly higher amplitude of variability in the 0.5–2 keV band than in the 2–10 keV band. The continuum is adequately parameterized as a Γ ∼ 2.5 power-law across the 0.6–10 keV ...
