Muscle samples from sedentary young (20-30 yr.) and older (65-75 yr.) men and women (5 per group) were obt...

The metabolic equivalent (MET) is a widely used physiological concept that represents a simple procedure for expressing energy cost of physical activities as multiples of resting metabolic rate (RMR). The value equating 1 MET (3.5 ml O2 x kg(-1) x min(-1) or 1 kcal x kg(-1) x h(-1)) was first derived from the resting O2 consumption (VO2) of one person, a 70-kg, 40-yr-old man. Given the extensiv...

To investigate the effects of training in normoxia vs. training in normobaric hypoxia (fraction of inspired O2 = 20.9 vs. 13.5%, respectively) on the regulation of Na+-K+-ATPase pump concentration in skeletal muscle (vastus lateralis), 9 untrained men, ranging in age from 19 to 25 yr, underwent 8 wk of cycle training. The training consisted of both prolonged and intermittent single leg exercise...

A questionnaire survey was done to examine the associations between the dimensions of safety climate and the nurses' motivation toward patient safety. Excluding nursing directors, a total of 371 full-time female Japanese nurses (registered nurses and licensed practical nurses) working in 6 hospitals of fewer than 250 beds were analyzed. The average age was 35.6 yr (range, 20-69). For the safety...

The prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) increases with age. Moderate to severe UI affects 7% of women 20 to 39 yr of age, 17% 40 to 59 yr of age, 23% 60 to 79 yr of age, and 32% 80 yr of age.1 The prevalence in men is approximately one third that of women, until it equalizes in the ninth decade. Nursing home residents have especially high rates of UI, ranging from 60 to 78% in women and 45 ...

RATIONALE The study of genetic modifiers in cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease requires rigorous phenotyping. One type of genetic association study design compares polymorphisms in patients at extremes of phenotype, requiring accurate classification of pulmonary disease at varying ages. OBJECTIVE To evaluate approaches to quantify severity of pulmonary disease and their ability to discriminate...

We investigated the hemodynamic determinants of the age-associated decline in maximal oxygen uptake (V(O2 max)) and the influence of gender on the decline in V(O2 max) and its determinants in old and very old men and women. Sedentary, 60- to 92-yr-old women (n = 71) and men (n = 29), with no evidence of cardiovascular disease, underwent maximal treadmill exercise tests during which V(O2 max) an...

Demography provides critical data to increase our understanding of the evolution, ecology, and conservation of primate populations. The chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania, have been studied for more than 34 yr on the basis of individual identification and standardized attendance records. From this long-term study, we derived the following demographic data: The major cau...

A case of intravascular bronchioloalveolar tumour (IVBAT) presenting in a 49 yr old asymptomatic man is reported. IVBAT was diagnosed by open lung biopsy. The disease had a presumable duration of ten years and showed a low tendency to progress. The endothelial origin of the tumour was immunohistochemically proven.
