abstract background & aim: recent increase of hormonal disorders in human may be correlated to the increased exposure to electromagnetic fields produced by various instruments, including cell phones. thyroid gland is one of the organs most likely to be exposed to cell phone radiation. whereas garlic is known as reducing risk factors for various diseases. the aim of this study is to assess the a...

CTG triplet expansion was studied in lymphocytes and thyroid tissue in a patient with myotonic dystrophy (DM) and associated thyroid nodular disease. An approximately 7 fold larger amplification was found in abnormal thyroid tissue compared to lymphocytes, suggesting that anomalies in the putative DM kinase gene might contribute to thyroid dysfunction.

ORTHOTOPIC liver transplantation is frequently associated with hemostatic disorders and a bleeding diathesis.I.2 Accelerated fibrinolysis has been recognized as an important component of the hemostatic defectY The origin of this fibrinolytic activity, however, is still unclear. We investigated the role of tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA). a potent activator of the fibrinolytic system, in...

The long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) has been thought to be responsible for the hyperthyroidism of Graves's disease. It is detected by its effect on the mouse thyroid gland but cannot be found in all patients with hyperthyroidism. In an attempt to clarify the problem of LATS-negative hyperthyroidism, serum was obtained from untreated patients and its effect in vitro on human thyroid tissue...

One of the critical issues in thyroid cancer diagnostic is differentiation between follicular adenoma, follicular carcinoma and the follicular variant of papillary carcinoma, which in some cases is not possible based on histopathological features only. In this paper we performed molecular profiling of thyroid tissue aiming to identify metabolites characteristic for different types of thyroid ca...

Acute thyroiditis is an extremely rare complication of nocardiosis. We report a patient with hyperthyroidism due to suppurative thyroiditis caused by Nocardia brasiliensis. A 38-year-old Black male presented with features of thyrotoxicosis, sepsis and airway obstruction. He had no evidence of underlying thyroid disease, but was severely immunocompromised as a result of acquired immunodeficiency...

Thyroxine in the thyroid gland is considered to be firmly built into the protein molecule, thyroglobulin (1). Only after the gland is hydrolyzed with fairly strong alkali does its thyroxine become readily extractable with butyl alcohol. The iodine which circulates in plasma, on the other hand, can be almost completely extracted with butyl alcohol without previous hydrolysis (2). Considerable ev...

AIM We aimed to evaluate four immunohistochemical markers (HBME-1, Galectin-3, Cytokeratin-19 and CD56) used alone or in panels in a series of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and thyroid tumors of uncertain malignant potential (TT-UMP) cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed an immunohistochemical analysis on a tissue micro-array of 11 PTCs [six classic (CPTC), five follicular variant (FV...

To investigate the potential of intracrine or paracrine estrogen synthesis and action in the human thyroid gland and thyroid tumors, the presence of the messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs) of both cytochrome P450 aromatase (P450arom) and estrogen receptor (ER) was investigated by RT-PCR with primers designed on the respective coding regions and Southern hybridization analysis with specific prob...
