The ADP/ATP Carrier (AAC) is the most abundant transporter of the mitochondrial inner membrane. The central role that this transporter plays in cellular energy production highlights the importance of understanding its structure, function, and the basis of its pathologies. As a means of preparing proteoliposomes for the study of membrane proteins, several groups have explored the use of cell-fre...

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems are communication aids for people who cannot speak because of motor or cognitive impairments. We are developing AAC systems where users select information they wish to communicate, and this is expressed using an NLG system. We believe this model will work well in contexts where AAC users wish to go beyond simply making requests or answeri...

One hundred fifty AAC(6')-Ib-positive gram-negative isolates collected between 1981 and 1991 were examined by PCR for the presence of the aac(6')-Ib-cr variant and other plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes. None had the aac(6')-Ib-cr variant, qnrA, qnrS, qnrC, or qepA, but two strains collected in 1988 had qnrB alleles, making these the earliest known PMQR genes.

Objective: Fluoroquinolones are the commonly prescribed antimicrobial for Gram-negative and Gram-positive microorganisms. The resistance against these antibiotics is of importance in therapy. The current study aimed at determination of aac(6’)-Ib-cr gene within the Enterobacterial isolates and their transmission dynamics. Materials and Methods: Ninety-seven isolates of Enterobacteriaceae collec...

Avian tumour virus-infected chick embryo fibroblasts express new antigens, identical with the viral envelope antigens, in their plasma membranes. Electron-microscopic examination of carbon-platinum replicas of cells labelled with haemocyanin-marked antibody has shown the distribution of these antigens to be diffuse over the cell surface with an increased concentration on peripheral cell process...

Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm) is one of the most completely studied “smart” polymers due to its unique reversible thermoresponsivity. That is, when pNIPAm in water is heated > ~31°C, it transits from a random coil to a globule conformation; this transition is reversed when T < ~31°C. This conformational change is accompanied by water exchange process. When pNIPAm undergoes the coil to gl...

The purpose of this study is to examine caregivers’ attitudes toward augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) used by adults with mental retardation. Specifically, the study investigated the amount of training the caregivers received about their clients’ AAC intervention plans and the caregivers’ self-efficacy to facilitate communication from their clients. The survey was administered t...

BACKGROUND Cardiac hypertrophy is accompanied by significant alterations in energy metabolism. Whether these changes in energy metabolism precede and contribute to the development of heart failure in the hypertrophied heart is not clear. METHODS AND RESULTS Mice were subjected to cardiac hypertrophy secondary to pressure-overload as a result of an abdominal aortic constriction (AAC). The rate...

The aac(6')-Iz gene of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia BM2690 encoding an aminoglycoside 6'-N-acetyltransferase was characterized. The gene was identified as a coding sequence of 462 bp corresponding to a protein with a calculated mass of 16,506 Da, a value in good agreement with that of ca. 16,000 found by in vitro coupled transcription-translation. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence ind...
