The title compound, C(19)H(13)BrFN, was synthesized by N-alkyl-ation of 1-chloro-methyl-4-fluoro-benzene with 3-bromo-9H-carbazole. The carbazole ring system is essentially planar (r.m.s. deviation of 0.024 Å for the non-H atoms) and forms a dihedral angle of 88.2 (3)° with the benzene ring.

The title compound, dimethyl 10b'-(4-fluorostyryl)-8',9'-dimethoxy-4-nitro-5',6'-dihydrospiro[9H-fluorene-9,1'(10b'H)-pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline]-2',3'-dicarboxylate, C38H31FN2O8, is a new photochromic tetrahydroindolizine. One of the C-C bonds at the spiro C atom is very long [1.630 (2) A], thus explaining the photochromic behaviour.

The title compound, C(12)H(12)N(4), was synthesized by the reaction of hydrazine hydrate and 9-methyl-3,4,6,7-tetra-hydro-2H-xanthene-1,8(5H,9H)-dione in ethanol. In the crystal, the mol-ecule lies across an inversion centre. The pyridazine rings are coplanar and the C(6) rings adopt envelope conformations.

The synthesis under MW irradiation without solvent of 19 pyrazoles, of which only 8 were known, is described. They bear C-methyl groups and trityl, diphenylmethyl and benzyl groups at positions 1 and 4 of the pyrazole ring. In the reaction between pyrazole and trityl bromide an unexpected reaction occurred and 4-(9-phenyl-9H-fluoren-9-yl)-1Hpyrazole (7) was isolated.

The tricyclic unit is essentially planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.039 Å). In the crystal, the mol-ecules form stacks along the a axis. Inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into chains parallel to [010].
