Discrete linear transformations form important steps in processing information. Many such transformations are injective and therefore are prime candidates for a physically reversible implementation into hardware. We present here the first steps towards a reversible digital implementation of two different integer transformations on four inputs: The Haar wavelet and the H.264 transform.
Rate vs. quality is a crucial trade off not only for efficient video coding and transmission but also for adaptive transmission strategies in wireless networks and/or congestionprone networks. Scalable coders are well suited to tackle the time-varying capacities of these environments. In this paper we propose a semi-analytical model suitable for the medium grain scalable option of the H.264 sta...
In this paper, the intra residual macroblock produced by H.264 is investigated. Based on its characteristics, an efficient two-layer coding scheme for the intra residual macroblock is developed. The rate-distortion performance for the proposed coding scheme is evaluated. Experimental results show that our algorithm can achieve better coding performance.
Multihypothesis pictures are related to B pictures where two motion-compensated signals from previous and future reference frames are linearly combined for prediction. Multihypothesis pictures also linearly combine two motion-compensated signals but only from temporally previous reference frames. Consequently, multihypothesis pictures have the advantage that there is no extra coding delay like ...
The increasing use of more resource-intensive multimedia applications in communication has made it essential to ensure better utilization of available computing resources. At the same time, energy consumption has turned out to be one of the most important resource constraints in modern systems. Digital videos are an important part of multimedia, and a large number of video standards are current...
In this paper, we adopt a linear relative formula of a logarithmic function between bitrate and quantization step-size for homogeneous transcoding. Also we propose a novel transcoding method to convert the bitrates between H.264 coded bitstreams. The proposed transcoding method updates the model parameters given for the previous picture or slice by using an approximated relationship between bit...

HEVC (MPEG-H Part 2 and H.265) is a new coding technology which is expected to be deployed on the market along with new video services in the near future. HEVC is a successor of currently widely used AVC (MPEG-4 Part 10 and H.264). In this paper, the quality coding gains obtained for the Cascaded Pixel Domain Transcoder of AVC-coded material to HEVC standard are reported. Extensive experiments ...
In this paper, a new no-reference objective metric for the quality assessment of H.264/AVC encoded video is proposed and evaluated. Quality scores provided by the new metric are computed as a linear combination of simple features extracted from the video sequence received at the decoder. Using a set of 8 video sequences spanning a wide range of spatio-temporal activities, it is shown that the c...
