We experimentally study a new regime for supercontinuum (SC) generation in the nanosecond pulsed regime using a microstructured optical fiber with two zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs). Pumping at 1535 nm around the second ZDW yields a nearly flat SC over 1350–1700 nm. The interplay between the effects of modulation instability and stimulated Raman scattering are described through simple phase...

The existence of a light S =+1 baryon resonance follows from Quantum Field Theory applied to baryons. This is illustrated in the Skyrme model (where Θ exists but is too strong) and in a new mean field approach where Θ arises as a consequence of three known resonances: Λ(1405), N(1440) and N(1535).

The mutagenicity of a series of potassium alkanediazotates in the Ames assay was studied. These compounds were isolated as solids and are soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide. Upon addition to water, they form diazohydroxides (which are postulated intermediates in the decomposition of alpha-hydroxylated nitrosamines). The diazohydroxides decompose to electrophilic intermediates which may react with ma...

Glucocorticoid response in target cells closely correlates with glucocorticoid receptor (GR) level. We have compared the localization of GR (by immunocytochemistry) and GR mRNA levels (by in situ hybridization) in steroid-sensitive and steroid-resistant subclones derived from the human CEM lymphoid cell line. In addition, GR was localized in lymphoid cells from patients with various hematologic...

PURPOSE To investigate the expression and quantity of glucocorticoid receptor-alpha and -beta in polyp tissues taken from the patients treated were subsequently treated with topical glucocorticoid (GC). METHODS Eighty patients with nasal polyps were initially enrolled in the study. All polyp specimens were obtained prior to treatment. Patients then received daily topical GC spray treatment fo...

One of the most significant issues that occurs when applying chemical-vapor deposited (CVD) graphene (Gr) to various high-performance device applications is the result of polymeric residues. Polymeric residues remain on the Gr surface during Gr polymer support transfer to an arbitrary substrate, and these residues degrade CVD Gr electrical properties. In this paper, we propose that a thin layer...

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is known to mediate the cellular reaction involved in processing environmental contaminants and, ultimately, preventing accumulation of unfavorable extra lipids and proteins. Glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mediates the expression of genes associated with anti-inflammatory properties. Because AHR and GR are closely related in lipid metabolic dysregulation and in...

The mechanism by which glutathione reductase (GR) activity is regulated in relation to fiavin metabolism was studied in red cells of normal adults, cord blood, and patients with severe metabolic disorders using spectrophotometnc, fluorometnc, and radiochemical methods. The increased activity of GR in red cells of adult patients with severe hepatic cirrhosis, chronic uremia, and glucose-6-phosph...

We used primary cultures of trout hepatocytes and a physiological dose of cortisol (100 ng/ml), mimicking stressed levels in salmonid fish, to address the impact of glucocorticoid stimulation on glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mRNA abundance and protein content. Cortisol significantly elevated GR mRNA content over a 24-h period; this increase was abolished by actinomycin D, suggesting transcriptio...
