Four new species of Sapindaceae from the Guianas, South America, are described, illustrated and contrasted with their putative, relatives: Matayba ayangannensis Acev.-Rodr. a small shrub from Mt. During the preparation of the Vascular Flora of the Marquesas Islands a new endemic species of Heliotropium L. (Boraginaceae) has come to light and is described herein: Heliotropiumperlmanii Lorence & W. L. Wagner. It is known only from the island of Eiao and appears most closely related to Heliotropiummarchionicum Decne., also endemic to the Marquesas and known from Nuku Hiva. An amended descr...

1. Reported effects of different conditions on the stability of the purified chlorophyll-protein complex have been confirmed. 2. The electrophoretic behavior of the chlorophyll-protein complex prepared from two unrelated species of plants (Aspidistra elatior and Phaseolus vulgaris) has been investigated and shown to be dissimilar. In M/50 acetate buffer at 25 degrees C, the isoelectric point of...

Common bean producers in Brazil tend to grow plants as upright as possible. Because the control of this trait involves a large number of genes, recurrent selection (RS) is the best approach for successful plant improvement. Because plant architecture (PA) is evaluated using scores and usually has high heritability, RS for PA is performed through visual selection in generation S0. The aim of the...

We investigate the release of radioactive contaminants from Moruroa Atoll in a global high-resolution off-line model. The spread of tracer is studied in a series of simulations with varying release depths and time-scales, and into ocean velocity fields corresponding to long-term annual mean, seasonal, and interannually varying scenarios. In the instantaneous surface release scenarios we find th...

We obtained health surveillance epidemiologic data on malaria among French military personnel deployed to French Guiana during 1998-2008. Incidence of Plasmodium vivax malaria increased and that of P. falciparum remained stable. This new epidemiologic situation has led to modification of malaria treatment for deployed military personnel.

The long tradition of common bean cultivation in Italy has allowed the evolution of many landraces adapted to restricted areas. Nowadays, in response to market demands, old landraces are gradually being replaced by improved cultivars. However, landraces still survive in marginal areas of several Italian regions. Most of them appear severely endangered with risk of extinction due to the advanced...

Zeatin metabolites were isolated from seedcoats and pod tissues of Phaseolus vulgaris and P. lunatus. The differences observed previously between P. vulgaris and P. lunatus embryos, i.e. the formation of O-ribosyl derivatives in the former and O-glucosyl derivatives in the latter, could also be detected in seedcoats, although the levels of these metabolites were much lower and there was a conco...
