The case is reported of a patient who developed an acute arthropathy, which was initially diagnosed as acute septic arthritis. The true diagnosis of rat bite fever due to Streptobacillus moniliformis was delayed because of difficulty in growing the organism, which has fastidious growth requirements. The patient had no history of rat bite, which is the usual form of transmission of this disease.

Every year, large numbers of people are bitten by animals, and a smaller number by humans. The consequences can be serious. However, better health education to help prevent bites and teaching a bite-avoidance strategy when someone is being treated for a bite may help to reduce the problem. This article discusses treatment options and the possible complications of bite wounds.

Bispecific T-cell Engagers (BiTE®) antibody constructs enable a polyclonal T-cell response to cell-surface tumor-associated antigens, bypassing the narrow specificities of T-cell receptors and the need for antigen presentation through the major histocompatibility complex pathways. Blinatumomab, a CD19xCD3 BiTE® antibody construct, received accelerated approval for the treatment of relapsed/refr...

OBJECTIVE Nutritional, immunological and psychological benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life are unequivocally recognized. However, mothers should also be aware of the importance of breastfeeding for promoting adequate oral development. This study evaluated the association between breastfeeding and non-nutritive sucking patterns and the prevalence of anterior open b...

Bite marks suggest that the late Eocence archaeocete whale Basilosaurus isis (Birket Qarun Formation, Egypt) fed upon juveniles of the contemporary basilosaurid Dorudon atrox. Finite element analysis (FEA) of a nearly complete adult cranium of B. isis enables estimates of its bite force and tests the animal's capabilities for crushing bone. Two loadcases reflect different biting scenarios: 1) a...

Bite mark injuries often feature in violent crimes. Conventional morphometric methods for the forensic analysis of bite marks involve elements of subjective interpretation that threaten the credibility of this field. Human DNA recovered from bite marks has the highest evidentiary value, however recovery can be compromised by salivary components. This study assessed the feasibility of matching b...

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mean maximum bite force in dentulous and edentulous individuals with Angle's class-I occlusion and to assess the effect of different facial forms such as Square, Square-tapering, tapering and ovoid on the biting force. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study consisted of 160 subjects in total. Out of these 160, 80 were dentulous subjects and remai...

the mouths of some bony and cartilaginous fishes are located in the anterior part of theirbodies, with a slight variation in sharks, which have theirs located in the abdominal part. thisvariation is evolutionary over time. the force exerted by the jaws of sharks in order todismember their prey can be examined from two origins: .the determined force exerted by teethand muscles and the force as a...

Models of the mammalian jaw have predicted that bite force is intimately linked to jaw gape and to tooth position. Despite widespread use, few empirical studies have provided evidence to validate these models in non-human mammals and none have considered the influence of gape angle on the distribution of stress. Here using a multi-property finite element (FE) model of Canis lupus dingo, we exam...
