A conductivity measurement of electrons and ions produced in laser multi-photon ionization is a simple and sensitive analytical technique. Aromatic molecules in solution excited by pulsed (266, 337 and 355 nm) or continuous (Ar) lasers showed detection limits as low as 1.7 ppt. Surface molecules can be detected below the monolayer coverage.
Forces between single pairs of negatively charged micrometer-sized colloids in aqueous solutions of monovalent, divalent, or trivalent counter-ions at varying concentrations have been measured by employing optical tweezers. The experimental data have been analyzed by using the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory and a numerical solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation. With mo...
In the title mol-ecular salt, (C(11)H(10)N)[AuCl(4)], the Au(III) atom adopts an almost regular square-planar coordination geometry and the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings of the 3-phenyl-pyridinium cation is 23.1 (3)°. In the crystal, the ions inter-act by way of N-H⋯Cl and C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds.
In the title compound, [ZnBr(2)(C(12)H(12)N(2))], the Zn(II) atom is four-coordinated in a distorted tetra-hedral arrangement by an N,N'-bidentate 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine ligand and two bromide ions. In the crystal, there are aromatic π-π contacts between the pyridine rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.818 (3) and 3.728 (4) Å].
The organic electrolyte of tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEABF(4)) in the aprotic solvent of acetonitrile (ACN) is widely used in electrochemical systems such as electrochemical capacitors. In this paper, we examine the solvation of TEA(+) and BF(4)(-) in ACN, and the structure, capacitance, and dynamics of the electrical double layers (EDLs) in the TEABF(4-)ACN electrolyte using molecu...
We have developed web-based software for the rapid identification of protein biomarkers of bacterial microorganisms. Proteins from bacterial cell lysates were ionized by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI), mass isolated, and fragmented using a tandem time of flight (TOF-TOF) mass spectrometer. The sequence-specific fragment ions generated were compared to a database of in silic...
Plague is transmitted by fleas or contaminated aerosols. To successfully produce disease, the causal agent (Yersinia pestis) must rapidly sense and respond to rapid variations in its environment. Here, we investigated the role of 2-component regulatory systems (2CSs) in plague because the latter are known to be key players in bacterial adaptation to environmental change. Along with the previous...
The primary utility of trypsin digestion in proteomics is that it cleaves proteins at predictable locations, but it is also notable for yielding peptides that terminate in basic arginine and lysine residues. Tryptic peptides fragment in ion trap tandem mass spectrometry to produce prominent C-terminal y series ions. Alternative proteolytic digests may produce peptides that do not follow these r...
