This study aimed to determine the effect of xylitol on the development and remineralization of caries in vitro, and to compare this effect with that of fluoride alone and in combination. Two experiments were devised. In experiment 1, bovine incisors were each sectioned into 4 portions which were randomly assigned to 4 demineralizing agents: A) acidic buffer (x), B) x + 0.5 ppm fluoride, C) x + ...

OBJECTIVES This study aimed to appraise, within the context of tooth caries, the current clinical evidence and its risk for bias regarding the effects of xylitol in comparison with sorbitol. METHODS Databases were searched for clinical trials to 19 March 2011. Inclusion criteria required studies to: test a caries-related primary outcome; compare the effects of xylitol with those of sorbitol; ...

OBJECTIVES Our aim was to investigate the effect of short-term xylitol consumption on the microbial composition of plaque and saliva. METHODS Twelve volunteers (22-38 yrs) harboring mutans streptococci (MS) participated in the randomized, double-blind, cross-over study. The experimental chewing gum contained 65% xylitol while the control gum contained 63% sorbitol and 2% maltitol w/w. The pol...

We demonstrate that xylitol can be added to polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement to enhance the elution of daptomycin in terms of both the peak and sustained release of antibiotic. We also demonstrate that a PMMA-xylitol formulation optimized for daptomycin can be used to enhance the elution of both vancomycin and gentamicin.

The bacteriostatic activities of monoacyl sugar alcohols with different acyl chains and hydrophilic heads were examined against some thermophilic sporeformers. Monomyristoyl erythritol and xylitol efficaciously suppressed their spore development. The number and orientation of the hydroxyl groups also played important roles in this activity, and monomyristoyl xylitol exhibited the highest activi...

The study assessed the independent and combined effect of two specialty carbohydrates (polydextrose and xylitol) on appetite. Eight female and seven male lean volunteers were recruited from the University of Leeds campus. Using a repeated measures design, volunteers completed four conditions in a counterbalanced order. Each condition varied according to the yoghurt formulation administered: a c...

Although β-xylosidases with xylanase activity are preferential for the hydrolysis of xylan and production xylitol, reports on their use scarce. In this study, a multifunctional β-xylosidase (XYL4) was identified. addition to activity, XYL4 also exhibited low α-arabinosidase activity. The enzyme able hydrolyze bagasse xylan, oat spelt birchwood beechwood corncob showed highest xylan. Structural ...

Xylitol is a GRAS ( Generally Recognized as Safe ) polyol commonly used in the food industry and able to promote several benefits health. In addition, it can also be building block molecule for manufacture of different high-value chemicals. Currently, commercial production xylitol occurs by chemical route through catalytic hydrogenation xylose from lignocellulosic biomass. Since this an expensi...
