Scurvy, caused by lack of vitamin C, was a major problem for polar explorers. It may have contributed to the general ill-health of the members of Scott's polar party in 1912 but their deaths are more likely to have been caused by a combination of frostbite, malnutrition and hypothermia. Some have argued that Oates's war wound in particular suffered dehiscence caused by a lack of vitamin C, but ...

Histamine bronchial threshold, the provocation concentration of histamine causing a 25% fall in maximal expiratory flow at 50% of forced vital capacity from the control value (PC25MEF50), was measured in seven heavy smokers and in seven sex- and age-matched nonsmokers before and one hour after ingestion, double-blind, of vitamin C (2 g) or placebo. The effect of vitamin C on the common cold has been the subject of several studies. These studies do not support a considerable decrease in the incidence of the common cold with supplemental vitamin C. However, vitamin C has consistently decreased the duration of cold episodes and the severity of symptoms. The benefits that have been observed in different studies show a large variation and, the...

The effects of processing and preand post-harvest handling on nutritional contents, vitamin C in particular, of fruits and vegetables have been extensively researched and well documented. While fresh produce is not subjected to nutrition deterioration inevitable in chemical and thermal processing, nutrient reduction due to suboptimal storage conditions and time can be substantial. Processed pro...

During the past year treatment with the bioflavonoids has been widely publicized as a means of preventing or modifying the common cold. One of the reasons given for the effect has been that they potentiated ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in alleviating cold symptoms. Since there was no convincing proof available, either in support or in denial, we undertook a pilot study to explore the validity of t...

Melasma is difficult to treat. Vitamin C, topical and by iontophoresis, has been shown to be useful. When lasers are used, there is a significant incidence of post-laser hyperpigmentation. There is no single established treatment for the latter. The case history of a 51-year-old Chinese woman is presented. Intravenous vitamin C appears to be useful in treating this complication.
