In this article, we document the first isolation of a replication-competent deformed wing virus from Vespa crabro in Italy. Although the virus has never been isolated from this insect, the sequence of this virus shows a strong sequence homology with isolates obtained from Apis mellifera, which is considered its natural host.

We describe virus isolation, full genome sequence analysis, and clinical pathology in ferrets experimentally inoculated with pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus recovered from a clinically ill captive cheetah that had minimal human contact. Evidence of reverse zoonotic transmission by fomites underscores the substantial animal and human health implications of this virus.

Diagnostic Approaches The basic approaches for laboratory viral diagnosis are the isolation of the virus, demonstration of the virus or some viral product in clinical specimens (direct methods), and detection and measurement of viral-specific antibodies (indirect methods). Each approach has its merits, but direct demonstration of the virus and/or viral products is the most effective and useful ...

Evidence for natural foamy virus (FV) infections in humans is still lacking. However, accidental infections of humans with simian FV have been demonstrated by serology and PCR, but all previous attempts to recover infectious virus in such cases have failed. Here we describe the isolation of a simian FV from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of a healthy animal caretaker, who acquired th...

Tissue culture inoculation has replaced the production of the experimental disease in the monkey as the method of choice for the direct isolation and antigenic identification of virus from materials obtained from poliomyelitis patients.""' 12,16,18 In addition, tissue-culture methods have now made practical serologic tests for antibody development in man after natural poliomyelitis infection' '...

Many new diagnostic in-house tests for identification of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) infection have been licensed for use in veterinary practice, and the question of the relative merits of these kits has prompted comparative studies. This study was designed to define the strengths and weaknesses of seven FIV and eight FeLV tests that are commercially av...

Over 60,500 dengue cases were reported in the state of Espírito Santo (ES), Brazil, between 1995 and 1998. The study's purpose was to identify whether Aedes albopictus was transmitting the dengue virus during an epidemic in the locality of Vila Beth nia (Viana County),Vitória, ES. From April 3 to 9, 1998, blood and serum samples were collected daily for virus isolation and serological testing. ...

Ancestral sylvatic dengue virus type 1, which was isolated from a monkey in 1972, was isolated from a patient with dengue fever in Malaysia. The virus is neutralized by serum of patients with endemic DENV-1 infection. Rare isolation of this virus suggests a limited spillover infection from an otherwise restricted sylvatic cycle.

Cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) infected with influenza virus A/Hong Kong/156/97 (H5N1) developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and fever associated with a necrotizing interstitial pneumonia. Reverse transcription PCR, virus isolation, and immunohistochemistry showed that the respiratory tract is the major target of the virus.

We report the isolation of chikungunya virus from a patient during an outbreak of a denguelike syndrome in Cameroon in 2006. The virus was phylogenetically grouped in the Democratic Republic of the Congo cluster, indicating a continuous circulation of a genetically similar chikungunya virus population during 6 years in Central Africa.
