A 62-year-old man with a large ciliochoroidal melanoma developed early-onset scleral necrosis with tumor extrusion within 1 month of epibulbar iodine I 125 plaque radiotherapy. The eye was enucleated. Pathologic study revealed nonmicrobial scleral necrosis with extrusion of histologically intact and necrotic uveal melanoma cells. The patient has been followed up for 15 months without clinical r...

PURPOSE We report choroidal findings by means of enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) in a patient with idiopathic uveal effusion syndrome (IUES). CASE REPORT A 41-year-old man was referred to us with ciliochoroidal and non-rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. Sclerectomies and sclerostomies were performed at the equator in the lower quadrants, resultin...

In January 2010, the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) updated its staging criteria for uveal melanoma. Here, we discuss the staging classifications and evaluate an interesting case to demonstrate. The development of a uniform means of staging cancer, such as defined by the AJCC, is critical for information sharing among the research community.

PURPOSE Looping patterns rich in laminin are present in tissue samples of primary aggressive human uveal melanomas and their metastases. Because these extravascular patterns connect to blood vessels and transmit fluid in vitro and in vivo, the three-dimensional configuration of these patterns has been the subject of considerable speculation. In the current study, methods were devised to describ...

In a previous paper' the authors described their experience of the 32P uptake test in the diagnosis of intraocular malignancies and discussed some of the factors affecting the uptake. The 32p test is based on the differential accumulation of radioactive phosphorus between neoplastic and non-neoplastic tissue following an intravenous injection of the isotope. Counts are recorded from a site on t...

Depriving the eyes of neonatal animals of form vision induces axial eye elongation and ipsilateral myopia. We studied one-year-old chickens, an age at which full body growth has been attained, to learn if form deprivation myopia can develop at a later stage. We found that ocular reactivity to visual form deprivation continues in one-year-old chickens; but both the growth stimulation and the myo...

BACKGROUND Approximately 50% of patients with uveal melanoma (UM) will develop metastatic disease, usually involving the liver. The outcome of metastatic UM (mUM) is generally poor and no standard therapy has been established. Additionally, clinicians lack a validated prognostic tool to evaluate these patients. The aim of this work was to develop a reliable prognostic nomogram for clinicians. ...

Classified into three categories depending on cell type; spindle cell melanoma has the best prognosis, epithelioid is most likey to spread, whilst mixed cell melanomas have an intermediate behaviour; (of note, the size and position of the tumour also affects the prognosis of individual melanomas); uveal melanomas can invade locally within the eye, and form deposits in other organs, but most com...

ATTENTION has already been directed to the fall in intra-ocular pressure usually occurring in chronic primary glaucoma during the inspiration of amyl nitrite and its presumable diagnostic and prognostic significance (Cristini and Pagliarani, 1953). It was suggested that this fall might be referred to the widening of the vascular bed and to the decrease of filtration pressure in the capillaries ...
