We present a test which is sufficient to disprove thermal equilibrium in observed contact binaries. The test is applied to a number of systems with good spectroscopic data. All of them are shown to be in thermal imbalance. Accordingly, many (possibly all) contact binaries evolve on a thermal time-scale, probably in thermal cycles as proposed by Lucy (1976) and Flannery (1976).

Currently available behavioral assays to quantify normal cold sensitivity, cold hypersensitivity and cold hyperalgesia in mice have betimes created conflicting results in the literature. Some only capture a limited spectrum of thermal experiences, others are prone to experimenter bias or are not sensitive enough to detect the contribution of ion channels to cold sensing because in mice smaller ...

Simulated Thermal Response Test data are analyzed in order to evaluate the effect of the tridimensionality model’s feature in determining the proper value of the soil thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance, necessary for the geothermal energy storage systems’ design in real conditions. The 3D system’s simulation during the Thermal Response Test is realized by adopting the finite e...

BACKGROUND Ca2+-permeable non-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors are found in the spinal dorsal horn and represent a presumptive target for glutamatergic transmission in nociceptive processing. This study characterized the analgesic profile associated with the blockade of these spinal receptors by intrathecally delivered agents known to act at these receptors, the spider venom Joro toxin (JST) and ...

In this article, we demonstrate assays to study thermal nociception in Drosophila larvae. One assay involves spatially-restricted (local) stimulation of thermal nociceptors while the second involves a wholesale (global) activation of most or all such neurons. Together, these techniques allow visualization and quantification of the behavioral functions of Drosophila nociceptive sensory neurons. ...

Temperature is the most pervasive abiotic environmental factor for aquatic organisms. Fluctuations in temperature range lead to changes in metabolic performance. Here, we aimed to identify whether surpassing the thermal preference zones is correlated with shifts in universal cellular stress markers of protein integrity, responses to oxidative stress and lactate content, as indicators of anaerob...

Behavioral tests of animals in a controlled experimental setting provide a valuable tool to advance understanding of genotype-phenotype relations, and to study the effects of genetic and environmental manipulations. To optimally benefit from the increasing numbers of genetically engineered mice, reliable high-throughput methods for comprehensive behavioral phenotyping of mice lines have become ...
