this thesis attempts to investigate the effects of prelistening activities on enhancing iranian efl learners` listening comprehension. the present study investigated ways in which learners` background knowledge could be activated in order to enhance their l2 listening comprehension by limiting the number of possible text interpretations prior to listening. the experiments conducted in this study examined the effect of prior knowledge and vocabulary teaching on iranian efl learners listening comprehension. the current study has two purposes: one is to investigate the effect of background knowledge on the second language listening comprehension of iranian intermediates and the other is to determine whether second language is facilitated by the introduction of unknown vocabularies in the form of prelistening activities. to conduct the study different instruments such as listening proficiency test and four listening tests such as pre and posttests were used and various statistical processes and techniques including paired-sample t-test, and analysis of variance (anova) were used. the findings of this study supported all three hypotheses tested. differences were found between the means of preteaching vocabulary variable, the background knowledge activation variable, and mean difference between these two strategies variable. subjects scored higher when the unknown words were taught in advance. likewise, subjects scored higher when they were asked some relevant questions about the topic than on those without them. there was, in addition, a significant difference between the means of preteaching vocabulary strategy and background knowledge activation strategy. in fact, preteaching vocabulary had a better effect in enhancing the students’ listening comprehension, in comparison to background knowledge activation strategy.

Structural subtyping is popular in research languages, but all mainstream object-oriented languages use nominal subtyping. Since languages with structural subtyping are not in widespread use, the empirical questions of whether and how structural subtyping is useful have thus far remained unanswered. This study aims to provide answers to these questions. We identified several criteria that are i...

We present an empirical comparison between dynamic and static methods for structural symmetry breaking (SSB). SSB was recently introduced as the first method for breaking all piecewise value and variable symmetries in a constraint satisfaction problem. So far it is unclear which of the two techniques is better suited for piecewise symmetric CSPs, and this study presents results from the first e...

of a dissertation at the University of Miami. Dissertation supervised by Professor Gerhard Dahl No. of pages in text. (85) Pannexins are vertebrate proteins with limited sequence homology to the invertebrate gap junction proteins, the innexins. However, in contrast to innexins and the vertebrate connexins, pannexins do not form gap junction channels. Instead they appear to solely function as un...

Polyribosomes, ribosomes, and ribosomal subunits were prepared from rat liver using sodium deoxycholate and a variety of ionic media. They were examined in the electron microscope, mainly as negatively or positively stained preparations, and in the analytical ultracentrifuge. The polyribosomes consist of up to twelve or more ribosomes linked by a fine strand, 10 to 15 A in diameter, probably of...

Software engineers strive to understand software’s evolution and make software better and more reliable. In the last decade, software’s life cycle became an interesting research area. However, software evolution could be analyzed from different aspects. In the study, we focused on analyzing structural software changes between software’s versions. We used the WatiN project and observed its struc...

When integrating the views of a large telecommunications application database at Bellcore, it was found that some pairs of view objects had significant structural similarities but differed semantically. + This observation motivated the design of the structural integration methodology, described in this article. Currently existing view and schema integration methodologies are based on semantic c...

terns require a different approach to software documentation than has traditionally been used. In understanding large, evolving software systems, structural redocumentation through reverse engineering plays a key role. Reconstructing and effectively redocumenting the design of existing software systems is even more difficult than initial design. Recognizing abstractions in real-world systems is...
