The susceptibilities of 107 urinary isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci to 19 antibiotics was determined by an agar dilution technique. Major differences in the antimicrobial susceptibilities of species of coagulase-negative staphylococci were observed. Staphylococcus epidermidis was more resistant to a wider spectrum of antibiotics than was Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

Gram-positive cocci are common causes of bloodstream and nosocomial infections, and their multi-drug resistance is an increasingly serious problem. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of multi-drug-resistant Gram-positive cocci in a Chinese population. In this retrospective study, data about Gram-positive cocci from in-patients (January 2006 and December 2013) at the Second Hospita...

Daptomycin (DAP) is bactericidal against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in vitro, but it failed to eradicate MRSA in an experimental model of implant-associated infection. We therefore investigated various factors which could explain treatment failure by evaluating DAP activity, including the role of different cell wall components, adherence, biofilm, and calcium ions (Ca(2+...

Human alveolar macrophages (AM) have recently been reported to ingest and kill a strain of Staphylococcus (502A) in the absence of opsonins. To further investigate the mechanism of non-opsonic recognition, we studied phagocytosis of 23 clinical and laboratory strains of S. aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis by AM, and by blood polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and monocytes (MN). In the abs...

Induced clindamycin resistance poses a major problem for the use of this drug to treat staphylococcal infections. An infectious etiology is often implicated in presence CoNS clinical specimens. A total 183 isolates Staphylococci spp. recovered from different specimens were studied. coagulase test was done select negative Staphylococci, and they confirmed by conventional microbiological techniqu...

One hundred reference strains and 1,240 clinical isolates representing 26 species of the family Micrococcaceae were used to evaluate the potential of tests for synergistic hemolysis, adherence to glass, pyroglutamyl-beta-naphthylamide hydrolysis, and susceptibility to a set of five antimicrobial agents for differentiating these species and strains within the species. Sixty-eight percent of the ...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the in vitro susceptibility and cross-resistance of gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin vs older fluoroquinolones among coagulase-negative staphylococci recovered from patients with clinical endophthalmitis. METHODS A combination of E tests and disk diffusion methods was used to determine in vitro susceptibility and cross-resistance for 111 coagulase-negative staphylococci iso...

A total of 350 staphylococci isolated from various clinical sources were examined for bound and free coagulase, fermentation of mannitol, and deoxyribonuclease. The economical coagulase-mannitol-agar method of Esber and Faulcomer was found to be suitable for the detection of free coagulase and mannitol fermentation. A significant number of coagulase- and mannitol-negative staphylococci proved t...

Antibiotic-resistant staphylococci of the same bacteriophage type were isolated from the external nares of asymptomatic domestic animals and from human beings during an epidemic of staphylococcal disease in veterinary students. Not all of the infections could be attributed to person-to-person contact; spread could be explained also by transmission of staphylococci from animals.

chemical precipitation method was used in order to synthesize cdse:ag quantum dots (2-3 nm). their physical properties and characteristics were assessed by x-ray diffraction, ultra violet-visible spectrophotometer and tem (transmission electron microscope) and it was shown that the obtained cdse:ag quantum dots are cubic with high-quality. antibacterial effects of cdse:ag nanoparticles against ...
