We study a class of models for precipitation from a dynamical systems point of view. The class of models incorporates Cahn-Hilliard-type models for spinodal decomposition and supersaturation theories as natural limiting cases. We analyze existence and stability of coherent structures, and relate our findings to simulations of Liesegang pattern formation.

We propose Kolmogorov-Smirnov test as a means for recognising event-by-event fluctuations of rapidity distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Such fluctuations may be induced by the spinodal decomposition of the rapidly expanding system during the 1st order quark-hadron phase transition.

We examine the effects of hydrodynamics on the late stage kinetics in spinodal decomposition. From computer simulations of a lattice Boltzmann scheme we observe, for critical quenches, that single phase domains grow asymptotically like t, with α ≈ .66 in two dimensions and α ≈ 1.0 in three dimensions, both in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions.

The role of Ge02 in the Na20 B2O3 Ge02 Si02 quaternary system which presents a spinodal decomposition domain is studied. The physical properties of this system are compared to those of the system without Ge02. The leaching conditions of these glasses and the coordination of Ge are studied.
